I'm trying to gather information for when I do the numerous upgrades to my truck. I have searched for answers to the following questions, but I haven't gotten specific answers to the questions I have.

I'm looking for a little more traction. I don't do any hardcore off-roading where I have a wheel off the ground or anything where an LSD wouldn't suffice.

This thread pertains to the Ford Trac-Lok differential for the 28 spline 8.8" ring gear axle.

From the pictures I've seen this is an entire carrier that replaces the factory open carrier (if equipped), correct? If it is an entire carrier, regardless of what gears are installed, the backlash MUST be set, correct?

Can the tone/exciter ring for ABS be installed on the differential as well? I'd like to retain that feature if I can. I don't see why not because many factory Rangers came equipped with the Trac-Lok.

Also, would it be worth it to get the upgraded clutch/springs to make it stronger?

And finally, what can I expect to pay for install? Rough estimate.

i don't have answers to your questions per se, but i will offer some advice:

while the ford trac-lok works alright for may people (myself included), it is not the best. if you are going to pay for a full carrier replacement differential, spend a little more money, and get alot more! i would lean towards a detroit tru-trac, or a zexel torsen (they're pretty much the same if memory serves me, the zexel is what comes stock on the FX4 level II) a big plus with these two in particular is they have no clutchs to wear out!

if you gonna spend the money, buck up an get something better! dont rule out the selectable lockers either, but you sound like you want a limited slip.
