Tranny fluid change

I have 93K miles on my 02 auto anf i know im alittle over due for fluid change in the transmission but i've never done one before and was wondering how hard it is or is it like changing the motor oil? I've been looking online at advance auto parts and have seen this flush and filter kit for $15 and didnt know if i needed one to change the oil. also i was thinking of putting valvoline max life transmission fluid in since im almost at 100K.

take my advice
get the transmission serviced with a reputable tranny service outlet

if they screw something up , your warranted against faulty service

if you do it and screw up your own tranny ,, you probably don`t have the cash to have it re-built

Why?

Just drop the pan, change the filter, add new fluid. That's what I did.

because if you have a transmission repair shop do the transmission flush and refill ,, and they do something wrong and you suffer transmission damage

they have to repair your tranny at their cost

around $ 110.00 to service the tranny

unless you know what you are doing , i would not suggest you try at this time

at least with a transmission shop , if they damage your transmission , they have to swallow the cost of repairing or replacing your tranny

to do the service is not hard ,, remove all of the pan bolts ( make sure you have a large drain pan handy ) the spill area will be big

remove the bolt( s ) that hold the filter in , remove the filter .

allow all of the fluid to drain out ( some filters have a rubber gasket ) lube the gasket with fresh fluid

clean the pan out thoroughly , clean the retaining bolt thoroughly and apply some blue loctite to the bolt .

carefully insert the new filter , thread the bolt in and gingerly tighten it

allow the loctite to sit for a 1/2 hour to set

re-install the pan and bolts and torque them to factory specs

remove transmission fill cap ,, and pour in 4 quarts of mercon 5 tranny fluid ,

wait 2 minutes and then take a dipstick reading , it should show between low and full

start the engine and fill and check the tranny oil level , ( do not fill above the full level )

if you are un certain ,, p.m otr tech , he will provide more detailed info

have fun

With the information available on this site and on other tech sites, you should be able to DIY. I would recommend doing a flush as well. There should be a link on here for flushing your trans.
