Remove drain plug, let drain, replace drain plug, remove fill plug, fill until fluid runs out of fill plug, replace fill plug, have a beer.

You dont have to put anything in it to try and get some of the old fluid out?

I was planning on putting royal purple in my tranny but i just read that someone felt that you should not mix regular tranny fluid with a synthetic any opions on that?

Unless you tear it apart and clean it thoroughly it will always be a mix of fluids. I would flush it out, fill with RP, run it for a while, drain and fill with RP. After enough trans fluid changes it will be close to full strength, IMO.
