how much did the shift kit cost? 50 bucks? they are usually pretty cheap...

IMO, and this is what i would do.

put the shift kit in, fill it up with fluid and put 1 quart of lucas trans fix in it, then drive it.

my trans was JUNK, drove horrible, miss shifted, killed the engine all the time, you name it. i put in the shift kit a few other parts(not a full rebuild) and it runs great now.

and so what if it craps later, it was only 50$ plus labor, beats spending 2500 and the dang thing still moves!

Shift kit was like ~$80 off eBay and he was charging me $300 for full service and install. My truck shifts horrible right now, it over-revs and then shifts and thunks. He told me if he were to install my shift kit it would amp my "shift thunk" and make it even worse which would lead to the tranny taking a crap. Then I would have to buy another shift kit and get it all installed again.

Are you saying your truck doesn't misshift anymore because of the lucas trans fix and runs like a champ now? Or do you still have the same problems but muffled?

mine was bad, not sure it was that bad but it wasnt very good. when i put in the kit it made it better, it didnt magnify the issue.

380 isnt bad for what he is doing since he probably has 200 in fluid and filter.

idk man if it was me id pus h my luck and not rebuild it.

Ya I'm going to go ahead and let him do a full service on it for now since the pan is off and put the pan back on. Then I'll drive it until it blows and have it towed right back for a full overhaul, shift kit install, 4.0 internals, & full service for $2500.

That should give me some time to save but it could blow at anytime. The tranny doesn't seem too bad until it tries to shift from 2nd to 3rd and of course my delayed reverse.

Yea.....mines a manual though. I've got about 17k on the "new" trans since the install. I still have my old trans, and plan on fixing it and putting it back in next time I have to pull it. I liked the gear ratios better in the stock trans vs. the jy trans. The junkyard trans only had 5000 miles on it. the shifter however was stick in gear, and they torched off the shifter, so i had to pull the top inspection cover/shift rails off put and the synchros in neutral and put everything back together using the stock shifter assy.

What do you guys suggest? Should I just say f-it and get it installed and see what happens? Or should I hold onto it and get my tranny overhauled first? He says it's $2500 to rebuild my tranny...

Any feedback will be appreciated as I told him I would call him back and let him know how to proceed.

Take it to another tranny shop and get a second opinon?

Got my truck back last night and it runs a lot better with just the tranny flush, and he greased up my slip yoke for me and fixed my drive shaft. Anyways, I'm going to drive this sucker until it blows, but I don't think it'll go out for awhile, at least not with the gears I have. We'll see what happens.
