I have a shifter from an f250 that is much taller than the ford ranger 4 speed shifter, however the cast iron base is at an angle that makes it totally useless, I would like to swap the cast iron base from the ranger over to the f-250 shifter so I can have a taller shifter, so how do you separate the cast iron base from the black rod that the **** goes on?

 

You don't provide any information on your Ranger other than saying 4 speed and 1999 2.5L in the upper right corner of your post. There hasn't been a Ranger 4 speed since the 80's.


There's no easy way to take the shifter arm apart. The Ranger shifter arm is multi-part multi-layer arm with insulation, cast steel, and plastic with a **** glued on. No matter what you do, the weld could break because they're both cast.

If you're really after a taller shifter, I suggest looking into what the body lifted guys have to run....a 3" shifter extension. It's not that expensive, easy to swap over, and easily reversible. You may run into shifter boot problems though.

Another option is installing a Hurst short throw shifter. Considerably more expensive than the above suggestion, but getting a longer arm and/or making your own extension to put that ball exactly where you want it is infinite. The holes are 7/8" on center to mount the shifter and making your own extension if you have the ability and tools is very easy. Plus, the short throw is amazing even after the extension/longer arm.
