Tranny thump

I've searched everywhere and still haven't found a cause or solution to my problem.

When I shift into drive or reverse, the whole truck makes a loud, visible thump. It thumps every time it shifts gears, up or down, while driving. The atf level is where it should be, that's not the problem. Any solutions or ideas why it's doing this?

And not sure if this is normal or not, I wouldn't really know, but when I'm driving, say 45mph, and I let up off the gas and coast, the truck will thump. When I put my foot back on the gas, it'll thump again. This isn't when it wants to shift, only when I take my foot off and put it back on the gas.

The more important problem here is the tranny thump. Help? Thanks.

Ehhhh it kind of smelled a little burnt, but also like just used tranny fluid. It's also brown, no hint of red.

I'd take it to a shop and see if they'd do a free inspection or explain to them whats going on.

It could be a number of things.

Loose engine/tranny mounts
excessive endplay in the tranny
bad u joints

just a few examples

I've only ever had that from a bad u-joint (and on a different vehicle), but I don't know how common a problem it is on these trucks.

^^^^ its the u joints its a common ford problem my dads f150 does the same thing. get a one piece drive shaft and get rid of the 2 piece POS shaft that is in 97 and down rangers. Get a one piece shaft and rebuild it and you will have your problem fixed and something better than b4.

So is it most definitely a bad u-joint?

in my opinion, it's not "most definitely" anything until you get the problem fixed and let us know what was wrong.

I checked the driveshaft and there wasn't any give or play in it. The u-joints looked worn out and rusted though.

Check the drive train obviously but your local Ford dealer can advise if tranny software updates are available for your specific year tranny. They can do it at the service desk in the service bulletin section of their computer system (tell them whats wrong, givem you VIN, they'll advise if updates are available the decide if an appoint will solve your prob). I had a similar expeience and a software update solves the hard shifts. 2007 FX4 II.

Good luck dude!
