Which Locker for the rear?

ok so im buying 4.88's and a rear locker for my truck and my dad is going to have his buddy install them for me for christmas. im buying my stuff from 4wheelparts because that is where my dad recently got his 4.88's and detroit soft lockers front and rear for his jeep...also for an extra 10% they will warranty every thing you buy for life so that why im buying there. now for my rear locker i am between the old old and proven detroit....but it is locked all the time and in my dad jeep at least it sucks on the street, unlocking and locking as you go around turns if you give it gas. im sure it wont be as bad in my truck since it is a longer wheel base and i have leaf spings in the back instead of coils. but the other thing about it is that if i do that i will be permanently locked front and back because of the aussie in the front and they both work the same way...locked if your on the gas. in the snow that might be a problem. my next choice is the ox locker. nice to be able to unlock and lock with the reliablity of a cable but with the cable and the locker it is upwards of $900. the other one i was looking at is the eaton elocker. that one is only about $70 more than the detroit and it is selectable. i havent been able to find much info about it all the sites i have found on google are from like 2008-2009 and say that it is not that good but at the end of 2009 they are redesigning it and making it the best locker ever. also i think i read somewhere that the 8.8 version uses some kind of pins instead of a collar system on the dana spicer versions and the pins are weaker i guess and some people have complained of them breaking. also my dads 2006 2500 chevy came with a locker in the back that is like 3/4 of a turn on one wheel and it locks up. any one know what locker that would be? also i guess i could buy a open diff and just get a lunch box locker buy idk. what are you guys opinions? thanks

I am doing twin e-lockers. I've heard nothing but good about them. Never heard about the pin thing for the 8.8 though.

If you are really into the reliability go with a Detroit. You really can't go wrong there.

You aren't going to like the Detroit with a 5spd. What rear axle do you have, 28 spline or 31 spline? There aren't as many options for the 28 spline.

If you go with an autolocker I would get a lunchbox locker. In my experience they are a lot smoother than the Detroit. The detroit has a lot of backlash and can be pretty rough, even with an auto. If aussie made a locker for the Ford 9.75 I would get rid of the Detroit for it. Either way, you probably won't like the automatic locker with a manual transmission because it will really change the way the truck drives.

I have the eaton e-locker in my 28 spline front diff and so far it has been fine, but I haven't had it a long time or used it a huge amount either. As for the "always being locked" thing, if you already have an aussie up front it isn't going to be any worse in snow IMO.

If it was me and I had the money I would go with the Ox-Locker ($$$) and if available the electric shift option.

Yes big money but from what I have seen they are built to last.

I have the Eaton E-locker in my 8.8 and it works great. Only had it not lock once. Turns out I took one of the wires out on a rock. Spliced in a new section of wire, tucked it inside the framerail better and no problems since.

XJ D30. I will be running 4.88s as well but I do like no off roading and my mom will be driving the truck sometimes. It is gonna be my winter rig so I need it to be manageable for her.

No worse than brake cables and lines I assume. Plus the wire would be easier to route.

I've got a lock-right in my 8.8.... Thing is noisy, but it sure lets you know it's back there and hasn't really left me stranded yet. Works awesome and they're affordable at $300

You can drill the hole for the wire anywhere you want. Mine is on the top left of the pumpkin. And as Kevin said, the wire is in no more danger than the brake or ebrake cables.

If you leave plenty of slack on the wire for the axle to move and cover the wire in plastic loom it should be fine. Just don't splice stuff together with a bunch of crappy butt-connectors in a place where they cannot be accessed or may try to pull apart.

I have an aussie in may 8.8 it works great and its not loud, but I wish I could turn it off somtimes...lol
its just not as smooth driving as it use to be...lol it locks with a minimal amount of throttle
so you either drive like a granny or your squilling every where you go

ya i just dont see the point of buying an Aussie or a lock-right or a Detroit because if ur on the gas it is the same as a spool....and im always on the gas in my truck most of the time....especially turning at a stop sign...its gonna be locked cause im on the gas....so i might as well just get a spool

It's really not like a spool. I mean, you learn how much throttle you can give it before it locks. If you turn from a stop sign and you aren't too aggressive it doesn't lock. And you modify your driving sometimes. For example, if it's wet out and I'm making a left hander from a stop I'll accelerate harder in a straight line, then let off some while I turn (unlocked) and get back on it as I straighten up.
The other thing is, it locks when torque overcomes the traction available. On dry pavement with good tires, with some weight over them, it won't lock up as easily. But in the back of a ranger on wet pavement it will lock easier. Really I don't see that as the problem. It scrubs the tires a bit but it isn't bad to drive. It is the manual transmission that makes it more uncomfortable. It is the locking and unlocking while you're accelerating and turning that some people hate. Again, some people don't mind it at all, but some just hate it (shane for example). To some it is worth it, not to others. If your truck was an auto I would just say go for it, but I don't want to hear you whine if you don't like it with the manual. lol

i driven my dads jeep with it and its a 5 speed.....its not that bad i can live with how it drives.....im not picky about how my truck handles.....its a truck......right now it handles like **** cause i have no sway bars....it wonders all over the place if i hit a bump going around turns and feels like its going to flip going around turns on the HWY......i dont care how it drives...i just dont really want to wear my tires out any faster than they already do...

OX Locker… ! 4-Pinion Differential, HD Housing, should be very strong.

I looked at the eLocker and have heard things about it not working properly, not locking or not unlocking, maybe it was slipping; I think I heard on this site so have a searched ?

I hope to buy soon and OX Locker in the rear is where I will be, how I will actuate it is another thing and the front is still up in the air but it might be another OX.

So I am saying for one no eLocker.

well i think im buying the e-locker....ive read some good reviews and some bad reviews....a lot about the pins rounding off but i think if i make sure im stopped when i lock it in ill be fine....if not ill still have the 4wheelparts life time warranty on it so o well....i just dont want to wear my tires faster with a detroit and want to be able to spin only one tire some times.....any last words against it?

I think you'll like it as long as you don't mind an open diff most of the time. Just be sure to fully stop before you lock it, like you said. Also, due to the design it takes a little bit of movement before the ***** move up the ramp and it locks, so don't flip the switch and hammer on it.
The other thing that was odd to me at first was the way it unlocks and locks again when you change direction. For example if it's locked and your moving forward, then switch to reverse, the ***** walk back down the ramp and it unlocks, then they walk back up the ramp in the opposite direction and it locks again. At first I thought something was screwed up until I talked to one of their engineers and watched the video on youtube. So my advice is don't hammer on it right away when it's locked and you change directions also and it should treat you fine.
