even tho I jsut read the cooler topic here

https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=261

but..

yesterday my transmission cooler started to leak, and now ford won't warrenty it, cuz I hit my rev limiter so many times, and some other B.S. any suggestions on an aftermarket trans cooler?

how do they know that you hit your rev limiter???

maybe looking at a JY would be a good idea.

rngprerunner 07-02-2004 10:37 AM

I bought a Flex-A-Lite trans cooler. Give me a little bit and I'll show you which one it is. Plus I'll do a write up on how to install on since I am going to do it this weekend.

P0219 Engine over speed condition

There is also a P0297 vehicle over speed condition.

Sucks that they know that stuff huh?

Next time clear KAM before you take it into service.

TheForce02 07-02-2004 11:16 AM

first what is KAM and how do you clear it?

and second do they check this throught the OBD?

and will it record exactly how many times you've hit the limiter? i do that very rarely, but i am still worried now

blacknight 07-02-2004 11:30 AM

yeah it does suck that they know that kind-of stuff, I can see alot of people gettin ripped, because of it. if or ifnot it was cuz of me hittin the rev limiter, it doesn't make sense for them to say, ok, we can't do it, cuz that's the source of the problem.

I looked at flex-a-lite trans coolers, they are pretty cheap, compared to B+M

blacknight 07-02-2004 11:31 AM

hey whats up

can you take a picture before you install it as well? deminisions and whatnot?

blacknight 07-02-2004 11:32 AM

I do alot of city/highway driving, would you guys also recommend, me gettin a trans fluid temp gage, just to make sure im ok? im sure I am, I haven't really lost any performance of driving, or acceleration or anything.

Dave and Julie 07-02-2004 11:45 AM

I think it is ghey they are denying a warranty claim based on that piece of info. It doesn't log how many times or how far into the red you go, just that there was an overrev.

Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. KAM is Keep Alive Memory. That's where your CMDTCs are stored. Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes. And yes, it is all done through the little 16 pin connector under your dash.

rngprerunner 07-02-2004 11:48 AM

You should read my How To on the Trans Temp Gauge, its not to hard to do. I'v had fun watching mine this last week. It really get hot when I'm on it hard....

blacknight 07-02-2004 11:48 AM

can't they tell, that you disconnected the battery as well? would they even say anything then? and if they hook it up, could it tell, that it was hooked up to the computer before, showing those codes, or would it get erased as well? sorry for all the questions, I not know about codes :-p

rngprerunner 07-02-2004 11:49 AM

Oh, and I'll get some pics for ya when I get home form work.

rngprerunner 07-02-2004 11:50 AM

Yea they know you disconnected the battery. I failed SMOG the first time because of that. All you have to do is drive for a few days before taking it in.

Dave and Julie 07-02-2004 12:27 PM

01 2wd bumper

You failed smog because you hadn't completed an OBDII drive cycle. I can tell you how to do one if you like. That way you can get it done in a half hour instead of waiting to randomly do the right things the test requires magically.

Other than that there is no way they can tell you reset the KAM. Even the OBDII cycle is just a guess. It is remotely possible you could drive you truck for a year and never satisfy the test requirements, though it is very unlikely.

If you clear the codes with a WDS they will be stored as cleared codes, but you aren't doing it that way. ;) With a KAM reset the PCM becomes clueless.

rngprerunner 07-02-2004 12:32 PM

I would like to know how to do the OBDII drive cycle...thanks.

blacknight 07-02-2004 12:36 PM

ok.. so before I got buy a aftermarket cooler, should I

1.) disconnect the battery for 15 minutes.
2.) drive around, carefully not hittin the rev limiter, or not going over 92

then take it back to a different dealer, and try it all over again, and see wht they say?

oh yeah, on a side note, on my 02, this august will be 2 years I had the truck, and I just have under 34,000 miles on it.

NHBubba_Revisited 07-02-2004 10:32 PM

Woah! So they're denying you warranty service because you hit the rev limiter? Wow, that's a little rough. I've been to the speed limiter on I-495 w/o evern realizing it once or twice. I'm not about to dick w/ the thing (as 95 is actually fast enough for me anyhow), but I have been there..

04 EDGE 07-05-2004 05:47 PM

these codes are also stored in the "black box" and can not be cleared

ScottG 07-05-2004 06:04 PM

why would they have a rev limiter on the vechicle and then say you hitting it means you cant get ti fixed under warrenty...

to me it jsut sounds like you went to a shitty ford dealer and should try another one...I mean, the ones around here havent give me trouble for anything...I have had many things repair under warrenty that they usually wouldnt allow since my truck is lowered and "slightly" moded...but they did the work, told me how mcuh they liked my truck and sent me on my way

blacknight 07-05-2004 09:14 PM

well, I looked around in my dads basement, and actually found another cooler! it looks just slightly smaller than what I had on there, before, but so far it doesn't leak, I installed it within 20 minutes. ill try to get pictures up later
