Icon5 Trans Groan on initial acceleration/rough shift I/O 1st

'08 2.3L 2wd here. The transmission groans on initial acceleration with any throttle input past 1/3rd. As long as the vehicle is rolling, it won't do it again until it comes to a complete stop and the same or more throttle input is applied. Once moving, it will occasionally have either a rough or late shift out of first into second or when the throttle is released and the vehicle shifts to adjust for sudden RPM drop, shifts hard into second and softer into third. If driven like my grandmother, transmission shifts smoothly through all other gears at every throttle input. Any suggestions as to where to start looking would be greatly appreciated!
