Trans problem
Trans problem
Does the check eng light have to come on if a shift solenoid is bad. The other day OD light came on started to flash started shifting hard, would shift 1st to 2nd great 3rd would have to throttle 4than 5th did go in . By the way it's a 2003 ranger 3.0 4x4 got the 5R55E trans. So turn key off it resets until u drive an then hit 3rd comes back on an flashed. Someone said valve body so replaced wasnt it. I even checked the solenoids out they oham tested within range. And reverse it hesitates stall gas it it goes in. Put on scanner codes were p0734 an p0735 the check eng light didnt come on. So can **** selenoid be bad with check eng light coming on. 4 th an 5th gears out of ratio so am I looking at rebuild or is it electrical
No, the CEL won't come on unless a solenoid loses connection usually
Flashing OD OFF light does mean transmission code is set
Solenoids are just a coil of wire, that turns into a magnet when power is passed thru the coil, this PULLS on a valve to open it, when power is cut a spring in the solenoid pushes valve closed
With key on all the solenoids get 12volts, they share a 12v wire
Each solenoid has its own Ground wire that runs back to the computer
Solenoid is just a coil of wire, so..........
With key on computer is on
Computer will "see" the 12volts passing thru each solenoid's coil on its ground connection to that solenoid
If computer doesn't see that 12volts then it will set a code for that, for example
P0750 Shift Solenoid A Malfunction
P0753 Shift Solenoid A Electrical
This would usually turn on CEL since its a circuit issue as far as computer is concerned, not a "shifting" issue
P0734 and P0735 are shifting issue codes
If you don't have any specific solenoid codes then they are working, so not the problem, not an electrical issue

Yes, if there are no solenoid codes then they are working, so if transmission is not shifting then problem will be in the rotating part of transmission; bands, clutches, sprags
How many miles on transmission?
How many miles on transmission?
Not a common issue in the 5R55E, was in the 5R55N or W, I think, cause by overheated bearing from poor ATF circulation
I would be tempted to get a used/rebuilt one and turn that one in as core, maybe there is a passage issue in the casting
