trans problem????????

Ok so I just bought a 97 ranger xlt 2wd 4.0l from a dealership well on the test drive going up hill my grandpa and I could feel the trans shifting back and forth between gears this happen in what seem to be 3rd gear and as we drove it on the test drive it got better.
Well today I went on a 60 mile drive up and down hills at about 60-70 mph) and ever time it would shift back and forth between gears. What its going on with my truck?????

It almost always happens when going up hill!!!!!!!

I for got to add that the o2 sensor is going out so that also might be causing it to chug while going up a hill.

first when you say back and forth is it down shifting when going up the hill and upshifts after you have reached the top or is it constantly shifting while going up the hill but after you reach the top it stops? how many miles are on it? Its not uncommom for the trans to downshift out of overdrive while going up inclines to give you the extra power to make it. But if it is acting nuts when going up hill and starts shifting repeatedly i would definitly take it to the dealer to have it looked at. But I am no trans expert maybe someone will chime in later with more info for you.

by the way welcome to the site
