Transfer case fluid
Hello,
The material I read said that Ford just post-specced all their transfer cases to DEX/MERC LV. The LV is key here.
About half of the 40 oz. capacity drained out of my 15 year old unit. That is in keeping with every used vehicle gearbox I've ever drained.
I combined Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc LV and Wolf's Head Super Universal Synthetic Transmission Fluid leftovers to make the 40 ounces.
Both are synthetic ATFs I've used a lot of before my '05's transfer case.
My unit thanked me with nice sharp clicks into and out of 4WD.
The trannie calls for MERCON V and that is what it'll get.

Roger that George. I used a semi-synthetic equivalent to Mercon-V in the trans and it works like a charm. Almost unnoticeable shifting throughout all gear ranges. At the time of purchase, I also picked up 2 litres of actual Mercon-V for the t-case. It was after that when I read online about them "blowing up," so I decided to go to Ford to get their input. Of course, I took all that "blowing up" stuff in stride. Never heard of a t-case grenading because of that. Now, if someone puts 15w40 (for example) in a t-case that calls for ATF, then yes. I haven't done the job yet but I'm going to stick with the Mercon-V for the t-case. Thanks for your input. I wasn't aware of the new spec for the fluid. Much appreciated.
I dropped the pan and filter as mentioned above and was surprised that only 4 quarts drained.
It was darkened Mercon V. I've seen it before on 2 other Fords and was glad to see consistency.
I included a 10 oz. LubeGard red.
The vehicle had exhibited a "soft, take-off bump" which matches descriptions of dry slip yokes.
My brief test drive was in frantic traffic. Maybe it was smoother.
I do want to lube the slip-joint. Everything is 15 years old so how wrong can I go?

I think I have the MOTAL equivalent. What do you think of having a boot on stand-by?
I mean, 15 years old and dry. I gotta get my hands on it before I order a kit (boot, grease and clamp).
I'll let you know what I do.
