Transfer case motor. 4x4 problems. 4x4 light blinks 4 times?

I have a 98 Ranger. The vacuum system went out last year and I did the vacuum hub quick fix and it worked for a while. Now when I flip the dash switch, I get several clicks and then the 4x4 lights on the dash start blink 4 times. Do I need to install the manual hubs, or is there something wrong with the transfer case motor?

You should engage low and see if it actually goes into low. As for the manual hubs, you should get them anyway.

If it does go into low range, would that mean the TC motor is OK? I've got the TC motor removed now, but I will try to go into low range when I get the motor back on.

Yeah if it goes into low range then the motor is doing it's job. The hubs probably gave up.

I'm reviving my old thread here. I've done the hub quick fix. I'm still having intermitten problems with 4x4 engaging. I could not get into 4wd for the past 3 weeks. I here clicking, then the 4x4 lights start flashing. This morning, I decide to give it another try and flip the switch over to LOW just to see if the T-case motor will work. It takes about 30 sec, but it goes in to LOW. I switch it over to 4 HI and it goes right in. Anyone have a clue what could cause this intermitten problem? Could the hubs cause this, or could it be an electrical/t-case motor problem?

are you in neutral and foot on the brake for putting it in 4low?

i am sure the blinking 4 times is a code, but i dont know what that code would be.

Yes, I'm in neutral and braking while shifting into 4 Low.
