Transfer case/transmission leak??
Transfer case/transmission leak??
I noticed a drop of fluid collecting consistently on my transfer case. There is the gasket from the transmission to transfer case which is dry, the one just behind that (looks shinier than the rest) is damp and will periodically collect a drop of fluid at the lowest point.
i changed my clutch a year ago and am wondering if this is the Tcase leaking or the transmission output shaft seal.
It doesn’t leave drops in my parking spot but still concerns me since I’m taking a 1500mile round trip in a weak
any ideas are much appreciated :)
I wouldn't be concerned about the trip as far as the leak, but it might be a good time to check fluid level in the transfer case and the transmission, then re-check after the trip, to see if you can decide which one is leaking into the tail shaft housing
I thought there was a weep hole in the tail shaft housing, but maybe not on the 1998 and up models, assuming 1998 and up because of propeller joint in picture
If there is a weep hole and its dry then leak is not inside the housing, and might be external
The M5OD-R1(M5R1) transmissions had a common leak point in the 3 rubber plugs above that area, top rear of shifter housing, the rubber plugs dry out and leak a bit, not a big leak at all, but noticeable over time
They are called the shift rail plugs: seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...ntenance.shtml

Thanks for the reply friend, I checked both last week and made sure they were good. Also replaced those plugs too. I had my mechanic look at it and it’s the gasket between the two halves of the Tcase, do you know of any guides on how to replace the gasket?
I can get everything out just fine but I’ve never split a Tcase open, my mechanic wanted over 500$ which seemed steep so I want to do it myself

Google: Ford Ranger transfer case disassembly video
Several videos on what you will see when you open it up
Harder part is deciding what you should replace besides the gasket while its opened up, lol
You have a BW1354 transfer case, there are rebuild kits, some with more parts, like a new chain, others with just bearings and seals
