transmission problem

When i put my 97 ranger in 3-5 gears it moves but starts making a winding noise. 1 and 2 are fine. But it still moves in all gears. anyone know what this could be? Its a manual tranny

Can you clarify this a little bit? So the truck drives fine, but makes a whining noise in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears?

Most likely a slipping clutch, does it stop pulling when this noise is being made? Hard to make a good guess from your description, so I could very well be wrong. Also, have you checked the trans fluid level?

Syncronizers are worn.
And / or someone at one time filled the trans with the wrong fluid.
Run it till it dies.
