converting auto tranny to manuel tranny.

converting auto tranny to manuel tranny.

has any one ever done this? im thinking about doing this when i finish my sas.
has any one ever done it to a 4.0L or any other kind of motor?

i changed the tranny in my truck once already so it wasnt to hard to do it and i when i put the new tranny in i coverted my truck to a manuel t-case and it was easy. i no i will need a tranny of corse and pedel assembly,clutch and all the componets that go with it, i want the chorme fx4 shifters for the tranny and t case.is this worth my time to do this or is it a lost cause?

The 2002/2003 B-W 13-54M manual transfer case is different from the electronic one and will probably be very hard to find. Rangers also had manual cases on earlier years and MAYBE one of those would work along with the FX4 shifters. I think your swap will get very expensive unless you luck into the perfect donor vehicle.

The plastic trim is different on the steering column and there is a manual ignition switch blockout lever to replace the automatic's column shifter interlock. It may involve swapping the columns between the trucks but I doubt it. My guess is that you should be able to swap all the necessary bits from column to column.

The instrument cluster would need to have the gear indicator removed for a clean job. It just gets swapped with the blanking plate from the manual truck's cluster.

You also need the harness down to the transmission - it has different wiring for the manual transmission and I believe it may involve swapping out the entire engine/transmission harness. There are also slight differences under the dash for the clutch pedal position switch wiring.

Do yourself a BIG favor and replace the slave cylinder while it's apart, even though it only has 20K on it. It is a time bomb on any Ranger manual and requires that the transmission be pulled back out to change it.

Ryan you already found the t-case - you want a manny tranny right?
It'll be worth it cause as big as your truck is (kinda like towin) its just easier on the tranny. You shift when YOU need/want to shift. Like with my dad towin the gooseneck - he wishes he had is manual transmission back. (IMO)-trucks are suppose to manuals-I gotta auto this time cause I didn't wanna wait.
I'll talk to my dad and brother to see bout findin info bout changin over.

God don't waste your time. It's a complete abortion to do. You're gonna have all kinds of holes you didn't want or need and cut plenty more. You'll have to change the PCM since it controls the automatic transmission using the TPS and all. I can see why you want one I just can't see you wasting all kinds of money on it. You'll also have a problem keeping clutches in it if you're using an engine that came with an automatic transmission since you'll have to change the flywheel and thrust bearing. It'd be worth doing if you got the parts for free or very cheap though.

These trucks are made on an assembly line with either transmission. The swap is 100% bolt-on. No additional holes to cut. Anything that needs to be filled has a factory plate or a plug.

Not exactly easy but definitely feasible.

The real problem is that there are lots of bits and pieces to change over. That's why I say that working from a donor vehicle is the way to go. Finding and buying all of the stuff on a piecemeal basis would be a difficult and expensive task.
