Transmission shift pattern on 3.0 v6 auto Trans. Normal ?

I realize I don't have the torque of a 7.3 power stroke but even on fairly modest hills my 3.0 up shifts and holds a lower gear until I am beyond the crest of the hill. I am not an aggressive driver or racing up the hill, just whatever is needed to maintain speed up the hill. I feel like a 3.0 v6 in a small truck shouldn't need to be shifting and holding gears like this. Is this a normal shift pattern ?
