Transmission Went Out For The FOURTH Time...

well, many of you know i am on my 2nd transmission(rebuilt also), after only 4 years and 45,000 miles...

it wont go into reverse and the truck is in "limp mode"

any ideas how to get it fixed? or do i just need to replace it?

what is my transmission called? how much could i get one for used?

i have a 2002 3.0 2wd auto

You have three trucks, maybe its time to give up the ranger. Too many problems. I mean, you have two other vehicles to drive. You arent doing too bad!

the f250 is our hunting truck.

not my daily driver.

it is stored 160 miles to the north of me.

the f150 is a 1977 pickup. it gets 7mpg.

it needs about $3k worth of work to make it a dependable daily driver.

the ranger has to get fixed.

Well right now the 3.0L isn't the problem. The transmission is.

My mom's truck is the same year and has the same transmission and her truck is doing great. It only has maybe 27K or 28K miles on it, but she and my dad are very hard on it. I guess your truck is cursed?

Maybe you should consider another truck. A 2WD 4.0L might be better for you since you have two other trucks to take off road. And you can get a Cherokee for less than the cost of a transmission.

I'm pretty sure the 3.0 has the 4R44E behind it, someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Paul just swapped in a beefed up tranny in his (4.0) after spring creek claimed the last one, you might ask him. I think it was in the $2500 range..

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm pretty sure it's not the 4R44E. I think that's a 4 speed.

The 4R44E got replaced by the 5R44E behind the 3.0's and 4 cylinders about 1997.

5R44E is the devil

so, anyone know why it would be in "limp mode" and why it wont go into reverse?

If possible go over to rrorc.com and shoot toolbox-rob a pm about it. He is a ford service tech and knows pretty much everything there is to know about rangers.

had other stuff to pay for(bills and some other crap), so no new tires...

i was thinking i might look into just getting something that is good for driving to work, school, out of town...

a 4.0 2wd...

try and get black...

do some minor things... sunroof, system, clear corners, tint, tonneau, rims...

nothing that could affect it negatively...

but who knows...

right now, the priority is to get this stupid ranger running for me...

i know its his transmission, i just wasn't sure if they had different trannys for the 3.0 (versus what they use for the 4.0). plus he said he hated his 3.0, thts why i asked if it happens to many 3.0's (meaning the tranny in them) or is it just bad luck for him.

Manuals suck in heavy traffic. My next truck will probably be an automatic since I don't see myself not having to deal with heavy traffic for a while.
