truck binds up when in reverse

Ill start with some background info. Its a mazda M50D. The trans does have issues. It pops out of 5th and scratches when going into 2nd and 4th roughly 1/2 of the time.

i can shift into reverse with relative ease, but once in it, between 1/2 to 2/3's of the time, the truck seems to hop and bind up. It will come to a stop unless i keep going, but i dont. I had someone look underneath, and it appeared that the transfer case is bouncing while its happening. i recently changed the trans and transfer case fluid. they were both very dark in color but didnt appear to have any shavings in it. a jeep guy at work mentioned he thought that possibly the transfer case chain had stretched and was binding while turning the opposite way. does that sound legit?

has anyone had this issue? any inputs are appreciated.

I'd check the simple first.
Pull the rear brake drums and look for a broken shoe.

i yanked the drums. no broken shoes, but the drums appeared to have rusted then been driven on as they were very pitted. i grinded em down a bit as they are unmachinable. i also changed the rear diff fluid, which was dirty but didnt appear to have metal in it. i rechanged the trans fluid and this came out....

first thing i thought of was worn bearings or worn gears moving on the trans shafts...
