Truck's getting towed :-(

Drove to school this morning, and roughly 1000 feet from my parking lot the clutch begins acting up. I couldn't get the trans into ANY gear and when I finally forced it in, if I slowed down it would be jerky and almost stall.

Basically, the clutch isn't disengaging completely. I called Ford, then the towing company. They'll be coming by at 6:30 tonight to come pick me AND the truck up (its 1:20 now).

The truck was pretty hard to drive, when I finally parked, so I doubt I can make the ~25 miles journey to Ford. I'm not even sure it will even start since you have to use the clutch to start the truck.

This sucks. I guess I'm taking the motorcycle to school friday :-)

EDIT: I'll keep you guys updated on what happens.

yet another SLAVE Cylinder died...good luck with that might as well put a new clutch in while there in there...

Trigger01 09-14-2006 11:31 AM

That sucks!

got-dirty 09-14-2006 11:36 AM

been there, done that, three times!!! good luck.

HAZZARDJOHN 09-14-2006 11:37 AM

Not that I reccomend a Novice trying this, but you can start these trucks with the clutch engaged and then if you time the shifts right you can upshift just fine. I have done it a few times and it saved me a tow fee. Just remember to slide it into neutral when you come to a stop light. then you have to shut it off, put it in first gear and start over.

gatorblue92 09-14-2006 11:42 AM

thats the slave... you can fill up the clutch resivor with DOT 3 brake fluid and drive the truck to the repair shop to save on towing but if you do that (when mine died i did this) try to time the traffic lights so you dont have to shift or stop

GrafixGuy 09-14-2006 11:50 AM

mine was like that today...it was making the grinding sound in reverse...

casfz1 09-14-2006 02:32 PM

Man that sucks.

ive done this for almost a month when mine went out. i was 16 and broke as hell so i didnt fix it till i broke the top part of my tranny and it woulndt go into any gear.

RockysFord 09-14-2006 05:56 PM

When my slave cylinder went out on my 1st car i drove it home without using the clutch....you just have to find the right RPMS and it will slide right into gear...

Truck is at Ford now. The tow truck driver was really nice, I had fun talking to him on the way over to Ford.

I'll call the dealership tomorrow and get the full story on the truck.

with or with out a clutch? personally do it now.. but eh.

depending if you ge a clutch or not.

parts are like $350 with clutch so 200% mark up around $600 for parts. at $75 and hour..out around $1000 easy

i have a tissue box behind me if you need it

um no..you boys both realize there is no sincro's in reverse

you boys also realize our tran's and slave cylinders are different then the newer trucks. and also our clutches are only $150...

eguy208 09-15-2006 12:44 PM

Talked to Jim at Ford and they are going to replace the slave cylinder and clutch. He also pointed out that my serpentine belt is shredding due to a bad idler pulley. He wanted $225 for the pulley job, but I can do that myself.

It's going to be $1427 for the slave/clutch work.....but I am getting a free car rental. Parts come in monday so probably won't get the truck back until tuesday.

That's about 400 bucks more than it cost me for the same work from a ford dealership. Actually no, about $450. Ask them to check that again.

HAZZARDJOHN 09-15-2006 05:46 PM

I had it done on my Explorer for $800 and mine needed a new fly wheel. Don't know what to tell you but that seems awefully high, I have had an engine replaced for less.

eguy208 09-16-2006 06:46 PM

I'm not surprised if it is high. Tidwell LOVES to overprice things. I rarely ever go to a dealership, but it has to get done now.

My free rental is a 2007 Taurus. Damn thing is fully loaded with leather, sunroof, power everything and wood grain. It's sporting the same ole dogged 3.0 though. I'm getting the truck back monday evening.

I need to get pics up of this thing, its pretty sweet.

eguy208 09-17-2006 03:51 PM

Two things, first here are the pics of what I'm driving:

Secondly, does the fact that I'm running 33's without regearing help in causing the slave cylinder and clutch to wear. Or is 100k miles already a stretch for the life of the cylinder and/or clutch. Some of you said you have already had to replace it a few times.

if your at 100k and the slave went out for the first time you did a good job also a clutch should go out around 100k anyways so your fine...

Everyone talking about the salve clinder going bad id driving me crazy. My 84 has the TK5 manual and the slave cylinder has never been replaced in it and the clutch only once, what gives. That old truck has 1 or 235K miles on it and it's been through 5 or 6 new drivers that suck with a manual before coming to me. Why are these going bad so much? Kinda sounds lika a good thing that I got an auto for my 99.

bein that old, it might not have a hydraulic clutch. i dont know if 84s did or not but thats my guess.
