Umm, WTH is this?

what is the small rusty box attached by two small bolts to the back of my 2.3L manual transmission right in front of the driveshaft? It appears to be some funky harmonic balancer, but Im just guessing. It has F17A-4941-AA stamped on it. Hopefully someone will know without me having to snap a shot of it.

I think what you are referring to is a Center Bearing.

Is it something like this?

I am pretty sure that is a vibration dampener. There are different versions depending on the engine and drive-train used. The one on my 89 4WD STX Ranger w/2.9L engine and 5 spd manual connected in a similar location but stuck out a lot further and was a different configuration. It really looked out of place.

I worked in a powdercoat factory and those came in all the time. Not necessarily ones for rangers but it was similar,

I don't think it would necessarily shake apart but it's definitely there for a reason so I'd leave it where it is.
