4.88 install question

Looking to pick up a set of 4.88 gears at Summit this weekend (10% off entire store durring truckfest)

queston is, i was comparing the Ford Racing and Richmond Gears and the Richmond mentioned needed a cross pin to install, but the ford racing didnt...

So the Richmond Gears are 20bucks cheaper then FR, but if you add the 40 for the cross pin, its actually 20dollar more

Just kinda of curious on what i really need for an Explorer 31spline 8.8

Thanks

4.88 gears (actually 4.56 and up) for the 8.8 are funny. To put 4.56 in you have to grind the cross pin in order to allow the installation of the c-clips. D. has only used lower gearsets and has never encountered this problem.

It's a technical hurdle to overcome no matter who's gearset you have. Typically, you have to have a modified crosspin and insert it BEFORE installing the ring gear. Then the cross pin can be backed out just enough to install the c-clips on the axle shaft ends.

Perhaps the one gear set includes the modified crosspin and the other doesn't. You should probably contact the vendor to find out what they mean or search the internet for specifics and maybe the answer is there.

No matter what, 4.56 and up gearsets are difficult because the ring gear is so thick and the teeth overlap the carrier so much.

Rebuild kits do not include modified crosspins. What does your tech say you need? If he can modify the stock crosspin, you don't need one. I modified mine when I did my gear install, but I think 4.88 are rather more radical.

Your teck should know, or he shouldn't be doing the rebuild.

Be interested to know how he got the c-clips in then. As far as I know, there's no real alternative.

He MUST have used a cross pin, lol -- I guess you mean he didn't use an aftermarket one? Did he grind the stock one? That's what I did. Well, actually I ground the new one that came with the ECTED I put in.

he said he didn't make any modifications to get the stock pin to work.......he stated it was tight but it slid in..........

Okay, thanks. Well, it might be a function of the centersection geometry also -- my Auburn might not allow it to fit in properly. Sounds like maybe with a stock carrier you might not have to grind much or at all until 4.88's are in. Good to know for future work -- it's a pain in the butt to take the ring gear off again if you don't set the pin up properly in advance.

i could see were it would be a problem......

is there any other "special" part i need to install the 4.56's in the front dana 35 that i should know about before i get started?

You need to check the "carrier break" for that diff. Above a certain ratio, a different carrier is needed. I forget what it is for the 35, but it's 4.10 for the Dana 44. Definitely check on that.

For instance, on my 44, 3.73 and below use one carrier, 4.10 and above use a different one. If you go from 3.73 to 4.56 on a D44, you need to obtain the appropriate diff carrier. Bearings and all are the same.

No because you use the same spider gears so the pin still works.

On the Dana designs like that, there is no c-clip I believe -- hence no need to take out the cross pin to get the c-clips in.

But I'm not absolutely sure about the Ranger D35, so do verify that.

I'd never done an axle setup when I did my 31 spline 8.8, lol. So I know where you're coming from!

if the guy knows what he is doing you don't need the notched cross pin on either set of gears, if you are doing it yourself or you don't think guy doing them sounds to sure i would buy the notched cross pin. You can do like Griggs said and grind/notch the pin during the install. The guy i bought my gears from also said you can grind one tooth on the ring gear, I think this is what the guy that did my install did.
