Welding axle tubes

After lots of searching I cant seem to find answers to set my mind at ease. Has anyone here welded their axle tubes to the center housing? Did you do it yourself or have a shop do it? More importantly I guess, has anyone had the need to weld them? Anyone spun a tube before? If so, what kind of welder and rod did you use and how were the results? After lots of reading I learned about heating the housing, using high-nickel rod, slow cooling, using stick or TIG... Are the 8.8 housings cast steel or cast iron? Lots of questions I know, but I appreciate the education.

Yeah Trucks did that when they swapped a 8.8 in there Jeep Cherokee, never seen anyone on this site do it though.

You don't really need to unless you are putting serious strain on the axles, i.e. rock crawling. I don't know a lot about the axles other than they aren't very strong. By the time you will need to weld the tubes, you will probably already have a new axle.
