Yea! First Post! Anyway, Ok, on my 99 4.0 4X4 there is a small cooler in front of the radiator. Is that cooler a Trans cooler or Oil cooler? If it is Trans can I add a larger one where it is or piggy back another one on it?Thanks

It is a transmission cooler, and it is probably all you need. :roll:

You could always get a bigger one. Wouldn't hurt if you do a alot of city driving or wheeling. Cooler tranny equals happier tranny.

 

But I would want to know it was running hot before I even messed with it. I think there is a parameter for trans temp in the diagnostic tool.

 

I just bought a 16ft toybox so I want to keep the tannie healthy, so I will be picking up a Trans temp gauge this weekend to see how the truck runs normal and pulling my trailer and see how it does. I'll be towing out in the desert and out to Glamis so I dont want to over heat the tranny. You wouldnt happen to know what the safe range is would ya? I thought it was in the neighborhood of 190.

Sooo... I figure the best thing to do is just replace the stock cooler with a larger one.

 

My FX4 Level II aready had two tranny coolers along with power steering cooler also! But I wish there's an engine oil cooler to handle of the dead of the summer heat better!! I also plan to set up a tanny cooler gage and install the elertic fan at the same time maybe this summer!

 

listen if you do get another tranny cooler, DO NOT get a tube and fin, you should get a stacked plate style. they cost about twice as much, and you can still get them at most autoparts stores, but they are about 200% more effective than tube and fin coolers. just a tip
