What front diff do I have and how do I know ?

So this guy sells a lot of gears and what not and he is asking me what front diff I have. He says " I would think that your truck should have the Super Dana 30 which is what an 03 Explorer has in it." Ummm.... I thought they were all D35/28 hybrids ? So what do i have, how do i know, and where can I varify it ?

It has the D35 hybrid. The 2002+ Explorer chassis has virtually nothing in common with a Ranger.

I'm guessing you're talking about your 2003?

It's the Dana 35 IFS if so, low pinion.

ok so I need gears for a D35 then right ? the D35 hybrid still uses D35 gears ?

D35 Straight Cut (NOT reverse cut).. so yes.

Whats the biggest gears you can put on the D35 hybrid ? 4.88 ? Do I need anything special or different to install gears on the D35 hybrid vs a non hybrid D35 ?

the gears are the same as a regular d35. make sure you tell him standard
rotation.. as alot of front axles are reverse rotation.

The only thing that makes it a "Hybrid" is the carier, which has absolutly no effect on R&P.

I think somebody in your other thread found 4.88's.

You will most likely need a notched cross pin also.

I assume you're also regearing the rear as well?

yeah ur gonna have to gring ur cross pin down. and yes hes doin both.

Yes I am doing both, I knew it would be easy to find gears for the back but the front seems a little harder.

are you gonna run 4.88s with 35s? or going bigger?

The short term is 35's but I am buying a camper which weighs in at 2200 lbs empty. I am planning on camping as much as every other weekend to at least once a month. The long term after I get a suspension lift I might go bigger but I will at least go wider. I think a 35x14.5x15 looks sweet !

ya. i just think that 4.88s and 35s might be too much.

new tire / old tire * current gears = needed gears

35/31 * 4.10 = 4.36 (4.10-4.36= -.26 difference)
35/31 * 4.10 = 4.62 (4.56-4.62= -.06 difference)
35/31 * 4.10 = 4.62 (4.88-4.62= +.25 difference)

but on the otherhand
37/31 * 4.10 = 4.89 (4.88-4.89= +.01 difference)

im confused at which one id want to run with 35s. i tow quite a bit. but 4.88s is a little high but at the same time if i want to bigger than 35s the 4.56s just wont cut it.

Yeah i know what you mean. 4.88's seem like a lot. If there was a 4.63 ratio that would be perfect, but then if you went bigger even they wouldn't keep up. I am just thinking about my new towing needs, and knowing me I'll put bigger tires on it one day. I would hate to spend almost $600 for gears now only to do it again later. I like to do it right the first time once.

I thought stock tires were 30's not that it would make that big of a difference.

ya i want to do it right the fist time too. but idk if i would go bigger than 35s.

and ya stock tires were 30.6 or 30.8 i rounded.

Yeah if you are not going to go bigger then 35's 4.56's is plenty, actually according to your math .06 from perfect

35/31 * 4.10 = 4.62 (4.56-4.62= -.06 difference)

haha ya i hear ya. it isnt any fun at all cleaning muddy water out of the cab and everywhere else.

If I thought the front end would handle it i would put 44 inch tires on it. Or I could be secretly building such a project.

interesting, I was told the whole front end falls apart with anything bigger then 35's(not that I believed it), no really I want either an RCD or weldtec and figureing out tires later, After that I might build up a Jeep with D60 front an rear and 44 inch tires.

meh it prolly does but im just gonna risk it.

That truck is 4x4 right ?

I know RyanRebel had 38.5's on his truck and wheeled it and didn't break anything(that I know of). I really think I might go to 35x14.5x15 after a RCD. But no bigger.
