T5 Swap

This is to stop hijacking Maurices thread.

You can now buy a 2005+ v6 mustang stick from a boneyard. Its a T5 with all the workings already there. Flywheel, bellhousing, starter.. You will still have to get your drive-shaft adjusted for it, but its a direct swap now.

I want to discuss the possiblities of this as a swap into a 4x4 truck, for both better transmision then the stock 5speed and to open up Transfer case options.

Advance Adapters used to make an adapter kit for the T5 to the BW 1350/1354 t-case used in RBV's. Unfortunately, the adapter kit has been discontinued.

I don't think he's looking at adapters for the T-case. I think this is more what T-cases can be used once the T5 is into the Ranger.

I'm curious to know about the 2005+ Mustang 5-speed T5s. If they really do fit all the 4.0's that are in Rangers, seems like that would be the best bet.

What are the advantages over the current Ranger transmission? Is the T5 still a hydraulic clutch system? Would the current system need to be modified at all?

Yea Im more looking at the T5 for the other Transfercases that will fit, either with adapters or with out. The major question is will the Tailhousing from other T5's fit the mustang version? Cause with out a 4x4 tailhousing it doesnt leave much open for the swap.

Mustang T-5s are 2WD and will not bolt directly to any transfer case. For that you would need an OE 4x4 extension housing or a conversion housing like the one from Advance.

As I mentioned, the Advance kit has been discontinued, so that option is out.

AFAIK, Ford never sold a T-5 in a 4x4 application. That means going to another manufacturer that did such as Chevy's S10 4x4. The question there is whether the bolt pattern of the S-dime housing would match a stock Ranger BW1354 or any other t-case that is small enough to fit inside the DS frame rail.

Some other considerations with the T-5:
  • The shifter stub is in the extension housing, about a foot or so farther back from the factory Ranger shifter position.
  • There is no place for an OSS sensor. Without it, the speedometer would not work on a 2001 or later Ranger.
  • T-5's were made in several versions, some much stronger than others. I wouldn't want one of the wimpy ones.

Im looking at this swap for my trail truck so, the speedo issue isnt a problem, From what Ive seen the S10 T5 tailhousing (2wd) will fit, and fixes the shifter location problem. I need to see if the 4wd does the same, which I imagine it does.

What Im thinking is getting a 2005+ mustang T5 for the 4.0L, and then getting the S10 4x4 tailhousing and I think the pattern for that tailhousing is a np 231 or something, which would allow me to run a jeep tcase, like that of a rubicon or something.

the s10's came with NP207 Tcases with the T5. The manual has a 21 spline output and the same pattern as a NP231. This opens up alot of possibilities as the Rubicon Tcase, Some Dodge Tcases and alot others will fit the s10 tailhousing.

For research sake, if say I was able to get the bellhousing from a 05+ Mustang and use an older T5, what would be the best older T5 to use? I know they made a couple different versions through out the years.

Also is there a Difference between a Tremec T5 and BW T5 or are they the same thing just refered to with two names?

And D how did you do the clutch pedal since you are no longer hydro clutched, did you just nab the clutch assembly from a mustang?

Think of the Slave Cylinnders in the Ranger M5 tranny.. how easily do they give up? Theres at LEAST 3 people ( Myself, Bob and one other ) that had them give up before 20k miles.

I've beaten that Borg and it has yet to fail. At one time, it was in my 84 ranger behind a 351.

Honest advantages? Maybe RedneckStone will comment on this as He drives his truck and had the chance to slam the gears in mine. Maybe Sk0t or someone else whom normally drives a stick will as well. ShadyLuke? ( he hasn't been around much ).

The T5 shifts a lot nicer and the gear ratios can be changed ( aftermarket suppliers ). Shifters anyone? This is outside of rebuild kits being common and a lot cheaper then whats offered for the M5.

Strength? Parts? Ease to fix? Theres really no comparison that could be made outside of the factory one coming in the truck and until it goes, you'll see no advantage as whats there is presently satisfying ones needs.
Thanks D. I figured it was something like that. I just got a new clutch and everything in my Ranger, so when that gives up the ghost again in a couple of years, maybe I'll be ready for a new transmission.
