The how-to you are referring to is the Ford Racing Rear Disc Swap for a Ranger. It's basically EXACTLY what the expo has, and only works on the 31spline ranger rear ends(Fx4 Level II)

Here's the kit I've been eye-balling. Appears to be for 8.8 axles for Mustangs so I'm not sure how much work (if any) it would take to make it work.

It's about half way down the page. $525 for everything including Parking Brake.
Much cheaper the SSBC, but probably won't look as good. My opinion though is if it works well, why not. I can paint it to make it look pretty.

Explorer axle is a good swap but need to cut off the old spring perches and weld on new spring perches and leaf spring mount. With an FX4 LVL II it's a direct swap and you can just swap to disc brakes down the road. But FX4 LVL II axles may be a little bit harder to find.

Not to mention that the Explorer Axle is slightly wider then a Ranger axle so it can create alignment issues if you don't tell the guys aligning your truck about it.

how would it cause alignment issues?? it's a solid rear axle!! it's 3/4" wider at each side(1.5" total)

It may be false information, but I thought they somehow lined up the front with the back somehow. Now, if you tell them about the difference I don't think it's an issue at all.
