i am already swapping 4.88s into the truck should i go ahead and get a diff cover to go with it? i have to replace the seal anyways and i kinda want to get a new one is it worth it or is the factory one just fine?

 

not really.

unless you have a chance of banging it up offroad. those diff covers help protect the insides from damage if you dent up the diff cover.

but they look cool if you're jacked up enough to see it.

 

There isn't much to the factory covers at all. One good hit on a rock and it'd be finished. I'd swap it out while you have the stock one off!

yeah just replace it, i'm replacing mine so i'll have a drain plug. and it'll look better than stock too.
not a fan of the cheap polished SS ones though, they look out of place. also pretty weak...

one thing instead of a new cover is a diff cover protector, like those from purplecranium.com worth a shot too.

 

dont like the look of protectors all the street lifted trucks out here have them...not a big deal on the drain plug its got a fill plug which is enough for me. plus the shop the truck is at now could put a drain plug in if i really wanted one

 

yeah and when i worked at valvoline we just used a suction machine to suck out the old stuff. I just wanted to make it easier for me.

 

makes sense ordered it $80 shipped isn't to bad for a diff cover. it will look nice under the truck

saw those they had them on sale for $180 with the dana 30 cover as well...the Solid should do fine for me i dont beat the truck that bad

 

I just dented my stock one and f'ed up my axle this past sunday. Now I have a nasty pinion or carrier bearing whine. Got to rebuild the whole damn axle now.


Get that cover, I am ordering one right now. Spend $80 now, or $100 in just bearings later, plus 4-5 hours labor (4-500 bucks!).

Dont cheap out. Get a good cover. It pays in the end. Ford racing has a badass 8.8 diff girdle, check it out. Fill/drain plugs, and increase in oil capacity for a cooler temp diff.

 

That cover sucks for protection if you wheel though.

I have the BTF cover, knocked it pretty hard on rocks and just scratched it up so far. I imagine it'll take a lot of force to bend that 3/8" steel.

Aluminum axle girdles are useful for drag racing, I dunno about offroading. Cast aluminum housings crack easily if subjected to a very hard blow.

 

yeah i would have gotten an actual offroad one, btu none had drain plugs, and I don't wheel too hard anyway. at least not yet...

 

not cheaping out just buying one thats on sale



don't need a drain plug the every once in a while the fluid gets changed i will get a new seal for it
