When the wheel bearings go out, They REALLY go out.
 

A few days ago I noticed the ABS light came on, also noticed the that I could hear what sounded like a lil louder than normal tire howl, except it wasnt consistant. Kinda like the tires were "wobbling". So I jack it up and sure enought heres a lil play in both tires, Looks like wheelbearings. So I call up NAPA $300 for each bearing unit!! Well phuck that. I found them on the internet last night for $220 a piece. I figured tonight I would pull one of them off and verify thats what the issue was before I spent that ammount of money.

So I thought.

I Was driving to work today and had a slight issue. About the time I got into the middle of town THe hum of the wheel bearings turned into a steel on steel sound :crazy: Then Clunk!! more grinding and I'm veering to the right. With the wheel turned to the left as far as I could turn it, I was going straight. No side roads so I kept going. Finnally found a side street and turned in and parked.

Called for a ride. THe wheel bearing unit completely grenaded. Heres what she looked like. Made things kinda interesting at 30-35 MPH

Now It looks like the seals on the back of this unit are toast, so I gotta pick them up. The hub assembly was $300. THey had one in stock, the other one will be here tomorrow. The Auto hub was pretty much full of Rust, and chewed up bearings. Probly goona order a set of manual hubs for it. The rotor looks like a beaver got ahold of it. Goona try to pretty it up some with a grinder but I have very little hope on salvaging it.

The other side looks like its damn near to doing the same thing so I'll do the other side as well. What a wonderfull way to start the day.

they must of had some serious play in them!! btw that beavers got its iron for the day. LOL

Honestly they didnt feel that bad. Couldnt get any movement out of them unless the wheel was on, and then they just barely rocked

damn that sucks. i could hear mine going bad and rode on them for a good 3 months before changing them and only one roller was bad when i changed them. glad mine didnt turn out like yours did

Lucky You. I noticed mine on Thanksgiving. Drove it probly a total of 50 miles since then.

Damn. That's some shrapnel. Good thing it didn't cause an accident.

Another reason why I like my 2wd. Bearings aren't $300. LOL

But if the berrings go and score the spindle shaft.. its 400$ for new spindles :mad: . I'll stick with 2wd myself though :biglaugh:

i better check mine out i've noticed a howl when im turning and at around 30 mph

Acctually its a pretty simple thing.... So far.
Seems the biggest PITA is picking out all the shrapnel.

Now quick question. If you pull that hub/bearing assembly out. And look inside where it used to be, there is a large seal on that back wall, that the bearing unit butted up against. What is that seal called? As mine is partially MIA.
