Where to buy ring and pinions ?

Like the title says, I am ready to upgrade my ring and pinion. I have decieded to go with 4.88. My towing demands have gone up and according to TRS's gear ratio calculator I should go with 4.88. Where is a good place, and whats a good price and brand ? Does Ford make a 4.88 gear set for our rangers ? I don't think it will be hard to find a set of the rear but I also need a set for the front.

This is the guy I used for my axle stuff when I built it. I got the locker, gears and rebuild kits all from him.

looks to me your truck is 4wd. if it is you will never find a set of 4.88's for the front. you will only find them for the rear. yea you can put in larger than a 4.56 in the front. i have a buddy who has a 5.13 in the front of his '00. i would go with the 4.56 in your truck.

the best place to call about infoand gears that can tell you what gear you need to run is 4 Wheel Parts. They will ask you some questions about your truck and tell you what you need.

Hey I contacted Griggs's guy and he is asking me what front diff I have. I thought they were all the same D35/28 hybrids. He says "I would think that your truck should have the Super Dana 30 which is what an 03 Explorer has in it"

So whats up with that ?

you have a Dana 35 standard rotation front end. Ford put the Dana 35 standard rotation front diff in the Rangers in 98 with the torsion bar suspension. pre 98 Rangers either have a Dana 35 (found mostly on1990 and newer) or a Dana 28 (weaker, and found on FEW 1990 and newer but mostly used on the 1990 and older).

when the person you talk to ask what front end you have tell them you have a "Dana 35 Standard Rotation".

Anyway to look that up and be sure before I order them ?

SanityAside 01-25-2006 06:26 PM

this here should help

its a 4.88 gear for the front.. good link zach.

4.88's are needed to simply maintain the factory ratio..
it comes with 4.10's and 31's

nated0g 01-26-2006 08:10 AM

very interesting that the same dana 35 for jeep rears is the same for the front. sounds like it would be easier/cheaper to get lockers and or gears.

I would never trust 4wheelparts with gears/install kits. I know all the guys at my local 4wheelparts and no way. Half the time you order stuff you get the wrong parts anyways. When I bought my winch the box was destroyed and the handle on the clutch drum was broken off, and wasn't even in the box, and they wouldn't do anything to fix it.

I only buy tires from them, cuz they are the cheapest. Except now a friend works for discount tire and I can use his discount.
