Why does my shift lever sound like Rice Crispies in milk??

When pushing the lever into gears 1,3,and 5 it makes a faint to prominant sound like Rice Crispies. Kinda snaps, crackles, and pops the same way... Weird??? haven't noticed it until today. Any takes on this???

Mine has always vibrated in 3rd gear. It's the only one that rattles. I found out years back that this was very common. Just another great Ranger issue that's just one of those things.
