Does the stock front axle lock in 4x4?

As the title states, I'm just curious to know if only one wheel spins or if they're locked in 4x4 and both front wheels spin. I haven't had a chance to get off-road because my rear end is about to bust on me. Also, if it does lock, is it a solid or LSD-type of lock. I'm very new to front axles.

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any ranger that came with a factory traction aid in the front axle, particularly not anything in the 98+ timeframe that I am most familiar with.

no. there is no factory installed aids (ie: locker, limited slip) in the front axle of any Ranger. thus, only one side of the axle spins...

So if you have an open rear end and an open front end, then you really only have 2wd...lol :)

I might not understand how the axles are working but isn't the reason the front end will hop in tight corners on dry payment because it's locked?

More than likely no. Unless you're not talking about a Ranger or somebody put a locker in the Ranger. No Ranger has ever come with anything but an open diff in the front.

there is power to both, but if you get in a bind only one is going to spin, maybe one day I will get a locker up front since it is not too bad in price and from what I've seen the aussie holds up pretty well.

Looks like i need to take off my diff covers and see what the guy before me did... because when i go 4 wheeling, or when i dropped chains with the z71, all 4 tires were spinning...

all 4 will spin, a good way to test it is too get all the off of the front tires and see if the one with all the weight keeps spinning. A good flex will do the job

Yes if the tires all have equal amounts of traction then they will all spin.

The front pair of tires need to go farther in a turn than the rears. Take a tight turn on dirt in 2WD, then look at your tracks and you will see that the fronts travel in larger circles than the rears. A front-to-rear speed differential is not possible with the Ranger 4WD. So it either has to hop or break something expensive.
