im not surem maybe it is the 9" brake, but i dunno

Make sure you get the fixed one, especially if you have a manual. If you buy an automatic '02 FX4 rear axle and put it into a manual it will fail.

i have an automatic. i have heard about that problem that is why i will get an 03', though will an 04' work just fine?

'Fixed one', what's that about? I have heard something about a recall, but never heard the whole story..

Well you're looking at the guy that started it. Less than 1000 vehicles have been affected and they should all have been fixed. I don't know how many autos were made at the same time and were not upgraded. I think Ford made a mistake by not fixing them all. There was a flaw in, or a lack of, casting in the carrier and it would fail under high torque load. That would cause the torsen to grenade and you to not go anywhere anymore.

are all edges 7.5 axles??

i got unlucky with my 3.0L and got the 7.5 NOTE: 4cyl came with 7.5 3.0L came with both the 7.5 and 8.8 4.0L came with 8.8 feel free to correct me if i am wrong, though i am pretty sure that i am right. |

I found a JY with an FX4 II axle and when i talked to the guy he said he didn't know if it would work on my truck, he didn't even think that it would work as an 8.8 swap and i have a 7.5. he said that he sold one to a dealership one time and they couldn't get it to work. do any of you know if it would work |
I don't know how it COULDN'T work... How much does he want for it?

The shafts are the same as the 7.5, so you only have a marginal strength gain, and thats in the carrier. Replacing your 7.5 with an Explorer axle may be more feasible, since Explorers are so much more common than FX4s. The Explorer 8.8 has disc brakes (as opposed to the FX4's drum brakes) and 31 spline axles, and can usually be found in a desireable 3.73 or 4.10 ratio. The only thing you will need to do to get it on your truck is weld on new spring perches, since Explorer axles are SUA, and Rangers need the Spring Over setup. When rewelding it is important to maintain a good pinion angle, so make sure it is alright before you weld them on. |
I was just thinking jeep stuff when I saw that, wanted to make sure.
The FX4 axle should bolt right up. I'm not aware of any differences that would prevent that. |

Right. The reason I suggest an Explorer axle may be more feasible is because of accessibility to the axle itself, not ease of installation, and perhaps cost. There is a gigantic boneyard here, spanning 100+ acres, and they don't have an FX4 rear. I checked for the sake of checking, but they had countless Explorer rears. |
And you are right in saying that. But if they were close to the same price the FX4 would be worth it on the ease of installation front. Aren't exploder axles narrower though?
