Hot trans

So I just got a scangauge installed on the truck and according to it the trans is getting pretty hot, just drove it a little and the highest it got was 189* but that wasn't a very far drive at all. I'm guessing because I've got 3.73's and 33's it is helping to heat it up a little but it still seems kind of high. I have no idea if the fluid has ever been flushed before since I'm the 3rd owner, but the truck has got 62k on it. Think I should flush the trans? When I back up if I don't come to a full stop and then put it in drive the truck revs a little high and then sort of almost bangs into gear also, but I'm guessing that's the slip yoke in need of greasing.

Mines usually about 150-160 under normal conditions. Two weekends ago it was 95 degrees out with high humidity, I pulled a car tailer around town with about 4,500 lbs of sod on it and the hottest it ever got was 190. Thats was at low speeds under 40mph with plenty of hills....

Hey korey like I said, the highest I see normally towing is 180, and thats if it's shifting gears or accellerating uphill upwind for a while. Usually towing I see 165. Normal city driving I'm never above 150.

It's the gears...bc when I had 3.73 and 33's, mine was the same.

Offroading mine would get to 180 pretty quick, and 200 was not uncommon, but thats offroading...you drove on the street!!

I know i'm not an auto, but i think i can sorta help...

Do you have a trans cooler? Maybe it's time to upgrade to a cooler, or even upgrade to a better cooler with an electric fan blowing on it.

IMO, see if you can find an 8.8" w/ 4.10's. That should help the strain on the trans and be cheaper than a gear swap.

I run 3.55 gears with 30's and the highest I got was a tad under 160, and that was pushing my truck, reving in the high 2000's for 100km straight. In the city I stay around 150/155. I got the factory aux trans cooler though, do you?

too many trans coolers can also slow the flow of the fluid, which will make it run hot.

mine is around 155 all the time now with the winch in front.

Try to get it flushed asap

Thank's guys. I thought it was because of my gears, just double checking. But I'm still going to flush it soon.

Ace, it's not a ScanGuageII. I'll have plenty of info on it soon =].

You have to use a Xgauge, you can find it on Scangauges website.

ditto. x gauge is a programmable function of the scan gauge II. It takes about 5 minutes to do it.

Anyone who is wondering why their trans runs hot...it's your gears.

Keith, 180 is HOT, I don't see that towing a trailer...

Once you get 4.10's it will be fine though, anytime your undergeared, your trans will run hot. I'm a little overgeared, so mine runs even cooler which is a huge plus for me. I've had 4 servos go out, 1 trans, 1 tq converter, and the clutch bands...my truck was in/out of the shop for a solid 6 months...it was terrible.

Mine runs around 160-170 unless I'm towing. Then it runs 190-200, depending what and where I'm pulling. My aux cooler fan will bring it back down to about 170-180.
