Wouldn't shift into reverse

My truck had been sitting for 4 days, and after starting it would not shift into reverse. With the shift lever in reverse the truck would not move. I then shifted into neutral, and back into reverse but it still wouldn't budge. Then I decided to give it some gas and I heard a loud metal clank noise and the truck jerked and finally moved backwards. It's been fine ever since.

Any idea what caused this, and if it's a sign of worse things to come? It's a '03 XLT with the 4.0

Thanks

Most likely, your rear brake shoes were rusted stuck to the drums. It's been known to happen. Are your brakes ever grabby the first time you stop after it has sat in the rain? If so, definately your rears stuck.

If it ever does it again, try to move in Drive to break it loose. Consider replacing your rear shoes.

Rear drums and water dont get along. Even foggy mornings will cause grabby brakes. In extreme cold I have had the rear drums freeze to the shoes. I thought i was parked in pool of water that froze but after i moved the was no ice under the tires.

This is one of the best reasons of doing a disc brake upgrade.
