Paint for rust

As I am about to replace the rear bumper on the 97, I noticed that the spare tire housing shroud is kind of rusted. Not all the way through, but unsightly. There has been mention of a black paint that can go right over rust and I am asking what that paint is called, rattle can variety.

Do I still have to wire brush before applying or just spray it on?

Thanks. Grizz

You probably heard people talking about POR-15. Not sure if it comes in a rattle can. I know Kilz comes in a spray can. Not sure if you have to brush first, but I would anyways

Where do you buy it? At Advance Auto or Lowes?

You'd probably have better luck at lowe's. I don't remember seeing it at any auto parts stores

There are a couple of automotive paint shops in Sarasota also. I can check there.

POR-15 from my knowledge is a brush on paint. Even though it is a tad bit expensive, its the BEST thing to use on rusted surfaces since you can apply it over rust and never worry about it rusting again. I hear the surface looks powder coated after it dries.

also if you do decide to use POR-15, keep in mind that it can deteriorate from UV rays. it needs to be covered with a coat of paint. rattle can or what have you.

I doubt the spare tire housing is going to be in sun.
