Painting question

I have a 1997 ranger. Right now it is factory red, but I want to paint it satin black with flat black and chrome accents. Should I wet sand the body before I start, or should I just paint over it, and if I do, what grit paper is best? I want to do it myself to save some money, and it really won't matter much if there is some parts of the truck that are still red (i.e. the door jams, under the hood, etc.). Any tips, advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have to sand the clear off the original paint.
