Picked up a Level II Rear Tow Hook, but with a surprise, and PICS
The surprise? When the fellow removed it from his Ranger, he must have used a torch to cut the bolt for the cross brace, because the nut that was welded to the brace was melted off. I was thinking I could just get a bolt and a nut and use that but I wanted to see if that would compensate the strength of the entire mount. Anyone know? I'll try to get a pic up later today.
These nuts and bolts are strong suckers, for they are 10s!

Im more hardcore than those damn bering sea fisherman haha! I dont have the pics on my computer, but a buddy and i commercial crab pot(not commercially, jus commercial 4x6 crab pots) off of kayaks. He's really strong and its a complicated process. But the weather here is much better of course.
It's a good show :-) I wouldn't say its the hardest job up here. It's jus an infamous job. I can't remember the last time a ship flipped.

Well I'll try to explain clearly.
First, a pot in the water obviously has a section of its weight replaced. The biggest weight factor in pulling something big out of the water is obviously drag. Pulling from a Kayak was very slow. Also, Ocean Kayaks are pretty well balanced, so it really wasn't that bad.
We were in two kayaks. What we did was he brought the rope around the skirt of his kayak, where it attaches, then up to his shoulders. He is a very very strong man. His name is Lee Kadinger, search him and you'll see all the wrestling tournaments he was in. I personally was stabilizing his canoe.
We then brought the thing after a half hour to the surface, and realized that you cannot at ALL pull crabs from a commercial pot in a kayak, simply you cant do it because you need to be able to move around, etc etc. So we dropped it back in. BUT we jus were able to say that we have pulled up commercial crab pots in Kayaks. They are actually pretty damn stable!

I've been paddling kayaks since just after I learned to walk. Every sea kayak I've ever seen is designed to go very quickly and easily in one direction. They tend to be very long and very narrow.. which gives them very poor 'initial' stability and only decent secondary stability. As I said, I can't imagine pulling pots in such a boat. That must be a sight to see.
Did you have outriggers on the boats? I gather you formed a T or something so you could support his boat while he pulled the pot, right? How did you get the trap out to the area you fished? Did you add floatation to the pot and drag it? Or did you actually load it on the 'yak somehow? Again, that must have been quite a sight! ... Or were you poaching from someone else's pots that they had already laid?

Ugh, I FINALLY got that rear tow hook mounted. The vast majority of the time consisted of modifying my Thunderbolt exhaust, but I finally got it installed and it's a tough sucker. If you can get one, I recommend it.
