Anyone rigged up a Cap Boot?
 

I bought a $100 cap off of Craigslist, it doesn't fit perfect but it's gonna do the job for now. I'm heading up to Mich in December to see the family for the holidays, and I have a decently large husky who will be traveling with me as well. Well I'm probably going to have my brother with me, so theres really no room for the 3 of us in the cab, hence the cap.

I was wondering if anyone has ever used a cap boot before, and if you would have any pictures of it. I have a slider window on the truck, but not on the topper so I may have to take the window out and put in some plexi glass or something that would work with a boot that just fits around the slider part. Any suggestions/ideas would be great, thanks guys.

i had a cap for awhile and it had a slider, I have a slider on the truck as well, but the problem was they slide different way.

If you open your slider you will notice the opening is about 2 or 3 inches narrower than you would expect, because of the latch stopping the glass. Multiply this times 2 for the cap glass sliding the opposite way and you have a completely non functioning opening.

I guess in your case it wont be as bad since you just have the one slider, however if you are going through the trouble of rigging up a boot, you might as well do the whole window. I highly doubt your husky will be able to fit anything more than his face through the slider as is, nor will you be able to reach very far to do anything for him.

Plus a boot will be more likely to seal against the outer seal of the whole window than anywhere in between.

I didn't think about that which is very true, thanks. I really dont need to do much with her, I just want her to know I'm right there so she doesn't flip out, and a little heat back there wouldnt hurt either.

yeah, I only have a beagle, which I thought took up a ton of room (she insists on sleeping on my lap).

But if you take out the whole window on the cap, and just grommet the entire thing, then you can just open the one truck slider and be good.

You might be able to glue the grommet only to the cap and still get a good enough seal, and allow for flex as well.

That looks like it would only work if both windows were removed right?

i have no idea i searched and searched google read through some other forums and thats all i could come up with .

i have a similar problem as yourself. i have a cab shell and two dogs which i take everywhere. my shell only has one window, the other one is missing (came that way when i bought the truck). both my dogs ride in the back, because they have a tendency to a) try to sit in my lap (85 lbs. bulldog is not a lap dog) and b) love hanging there heads, legs or rear end over the bench and blocking my shifter.

so today, i will take pictures, i am making a "tunnel" from sheet metal to mount to the shell and help form a seal between the shell and truck cap for heat and so that its not so drafty inside the truck when the slider is open. plan is to cut some strips of sheet metal, and bend them into "L" shapes then screw and rtv sealant them to the shell. the other side which will be coming into contact with the truck cab will have a rubber liner on it to prevent scratching and help form the seal. sucks driving with the truck cab slider window open and i cant have it closed cause they get no heat back there and they cant hear us.

i will post pictures today of the build up and how i made it. hope that helps.

a guy that i work with uses a tire inner tube and puts it between the cab and topper around the windows and inflates the tube enough to seal the gap between the two. he said it works well

didn't even think of doing that, and i have loads of old inner tubes. kinda like a cap condom... lmao!

Justin I'm actually from Northville lol, I moved down after I graduated about a year and a half ago. My parents still live there and I usually come up as often as I can, but usually fly. This time I will be driving though. I actually went to school at Detroit Catholic Central, back when it used to be in Redford too, if you know where that was before they tore it down about 5 years ago. I'm down for a mini meet for sure though! Ill be driving up on the 22nd though, so maybe we can try and get something going with a few MI guys.

Back to the dilemma, I don't want to remove the entire back window though, that's the thing, so I need to figure something out. That inner tube sounds perfect, and then I found this!

My cap already has the special boot.. if my pickup rear window was a slider, it'd be awesome..but mine doesn't. yet.\

Stockland caps used to make a cap that didn't have the front window ..and was designed that way. There are sites out there that provide replacement gaskets..

A husky, cold? Is that even possible?:biggrin: Our dogs love to have that window open when riding, they like the fresh air and to just see us! No seal though, I've seen our huskies sleeping out in a blizzard before!

Got any pics of said dog, we have four that we mush...always like to see a husky!

The accordian boot stuff works for a permanent solution. Any Custom shop should be able to order you a inflatable boot that goes from window to window. This would be your best bet, IMHO. he has some pretty rough looky nails though, might go right through it if he gets anxious in the back... Of course you could throw your buddy in the back and put the dog up front J/K

I used a clear inflatable boot for my ranger, I bought it from the shop that sold my the canopy.
It was a little squeaky off road and not 100% waterproof, but it worked pretty well most of the time. It kept it quiet with both windows open, and easily heated/cooled the back.
