Who knows how to remove the windshield on my 94 Turbo Ranger? I need to remove it to get to the window channel in order to fix the root of the rust issue that is creeping up further onto my roof. I'm guessing its stemming from a bad prep job when the windshield was replaced years ago.

The weather is getting cold now, so it's time to start ripping her apart.

 

IMO, I would have a glass company come and remove it then put it back in when your done with fixing the rust. They will come to wherever the truck is parked. Body shops have this done all the time. This way if they break it or it leaks after they re-install it then their responsible.

 

Search I know there been thread before on this. I think remember correctly they said use piano wire to cut the caulk or what every it is to get the windshield free...

 

I know I can have safe-lite or anyone do it. I wouldn't have made a thread if that were the case.

My thought is, it has a couple rock chips as is, so if I break it, fine, I'll just have safe-lite replace it when done. If I don't break it, then I'll end up still having them reinstall it probably.

I don't want to wait around for someone though to try and find my house (new developement not recognized on GPS and Google Maps etc).


Bucky, good idea with the piano wire. I knew to use something like that, but I am hoping someone will have a solid method and direction on how to tackle this.

 

I think after removing and installing windshields for a year I had maybe 10 that I got out without breaking. This will especially be difficult with rock chips in the windshield, they seem to break when the chip has degraded the integrity of the windshield. Anyways, a piano wire is a good idea, but what you really need is you are going to do this right is one of these, http://www.equalizer.com/mm5/merchan...tegory_Code=03 , it's called a cold knife and is made especially to wrap between the windshield and the glue without nicking up your pillars or pinch weld. You can also get some primer from the same company to treat your bare metal after you get rid of the rust under the windshield.

How does that cold knife work?

I found the other thread on removing the windshield. The only part I'm not sure of is the initial penetration of the wire through to the inside of the cab.

Do I drill through the rubber gasket? If so where on the gasket?
Do I peel it back a little and slip it through or something?

The initial part of getting a piano or guitar wire through to the inside is whats holding me back for now.
