Bed swap, who's done it.

I just picked up a 99 XLT and the bed is scratched pretty bad and has some decent sized dents in it. I'm thinking it would just be easier to swap a newer bed on it and then paint it to match versus doing the body work.

Has anyone done this? What was your experience with it? It seems pretty cut and dry to me. Disconnect filler neck at fuel door. Un-bolt bed from frame and remove tail gate. Then lift off and replace.

its simple.

the only thing you left out is the tail light wiring harness.

check on www.car-part.com for a bed, anything 93-08 should fit.

if you have a 6ft bed you can put on a flare side or a style side.

So did I, on a 93.

Get a 40+" breaker bar and a T55 driver.

Crawl underneath and SOAK the visible threads with PB Blaster or equivalent (not WD40).
Be prepared for a sore back the next day, if you aren't used to pulling in excess of 150 ft/lbs over and over again. You'll want something to rest your knees on too.

An Impact gun with 120 psi couldn't TOUCH those bed bolts. Even after I turned them out partway, the impact wouldn't do it and they don't get any easier as they come out further.

There is a disconnection point for the tail lights, right about at the center of the tailgate, so look for that. You also want a strong friend to help lift it off AFTER you remove the tailgate.

go to the website i posted, it will show you what your local junkyards have.

clean beds go for $300-$1000+ depending on how lucky you are.

when you buy one make sure you look at the underside of it, sometimes they look find from the outside but they are rotted where you can't normally see.

I looked real quick and saw them range from $50-$1500. The seats are first priority, then the front grill and bumper.

After that the bed and rear bumper, roll pan.
