get a red skuff pad and skuff them till there not shinny then use a glass cleaner to clean them then spray a couple light coats then get a little heavier

dgabr1 12-28-2009 12:17 PM

why can't you take them off? masking around 4 flares is going to be a pain in the ***

fx4wannabe 12-28-2009 12:20 PM

just bein lazy but i guess i could take them off

You're saving a lot of troubles if you just go ahead and take them off. Plus while you have the flares off clean behind them really well.

as was said, take them off You are gonna have to mask almost the whole truck unless you want overspray on the whole thing.

scuff them with a grey scuff pad. red ones are very harsh and they are meant for priming, not painting over. you can do it wet or dry. if you do it wet, put a little soap in the water.

Wash them off. Dry them very well. Use a wax and grease remover from a paint store if you can get it. Its cheap at about $6 for a spray can. Spray it on, wipe it around and with a clean paper towel, wipe it off while its still wet. Glass cleaner can work, but it can stain and streak with certain kinds of paints, so i would avoid it to be safe.

Im assuming you are gonna rattle can it. Spray the first coat very light. You just want a pisser coat on there to make sure you cleaned it right. Let it sit for a couple minutes than go with a second, slightly heavier coat. Let that sit for a few minutes and if there are no reactions, then you can go with a nice medium coat. Let that one sit and give it one more. Most paints require 2 or 3 coats. So just check the can.

Let it dry for a while, slap flares and bumper back on and be happy.

as far as how to take them off, there are a few threads that address that. I believe you just have to pull the clippy pins out of the wheel wells first, then the flares are just clipped in. THey are gonna be TIGHT so be forwarned.

There is little arrow kind of tabs that hold them to the fenders. The easiest way i found was to give the end towards the front a good yank to pop it out and get it started, then i just worked my way down the flare pulling it back and using a flat head screw driver to push one side of the arrow tabs in and pop it out. You can also remove the tabs from the flare, i cant remember if the tabs slide up or down into the flare but i broke a few tabs attempting that so i wouldnt try that one.

just out of curiousity. why do you want to paint already painted to match flares and front bumper? It would probably be a lot easier to find someone to trade with. you have a very common red.
