Painting grille surround

Thinking of painting my ugly chrome grille surround black to give some more contrast to the truck... Looking for opinions and also some instructions as for stuff to paint it with (i.e. grit of sandpaper to start with and whether I should bother with primer...)

Thanks

If I had my way, I'd probably trade this for an STX grille

Interested in this as well. I believe you can use oven cleaner to take the chrome off then you prime and paint... Not 100% sure though.

Might I also suggest painting the Billet Grille black

Depends on how the Chrome is put on. Since your Grille surround isn't metal i'm assuming its painted on chrome, in which case oven cleaner and some sandpaper will work.
try your oven cleaner if you want, but you'll need to use something 120 to get you going, and maybe finish up with some 320 or higher sand paper. Primer is a good idea since you painting plastic, i'm sure Krylon or Rustoluem has some kind of primer they make, but all you really need is some plastic primer.
once you paint, i'd suggest getting some clear coat and putting a few coats of that on there too, so that if a rock chips it or something along those lines, it doesn't take the paint off, and you can rub the scratch out.

I have my old grille surround (black)... w/ a polished billet insert... you could always buy it and then paint the billet black...

Apparently they sell this special "black chrome" paint that you can use to paint the billet black... I've seen some rangers with black colored billet and it looks great. I guess that I'd just have to try it and see how it goes...

Wirelessly posted

I have a black grille. I want it chrome. I will trade either of you straight up with money on my behalf for your grille with billet. PM if interested. I just had my grille painted at a shop.
