Anyway.. I think my next mod is going to be HIDs..What do you have, and what do you suggest as far as kits go? (be specific) 6000k? 8000k? any background information would help. I would like to do my fogs too, do I need additional parts for the fogs? thanks!

DDMTuning.com have pretty good kits for a good price.
eBay kits are very spotty, one seller may have good ones where the other does not. I've always ran DDM's though.

 

DDM tuning Raptor kit. I'd go with 6K, 8K is really blue. For fogs you want yellow or matching headlights? 35watts is bright and 55 is just an over kill.

 

Don't run a 55w without a projector IMO

 

I want white. NO BLUE lol. I tried their site and only found BMW stuff..

3bspec.com is where I got my kit for my tC. I've had the 50w ballasts with 5000K lights for 4 years and no issues. Quick and easy plug and play with the wiring harness too. If you want WHITE light, then no higher than 6000K and no lower than 4300K. Anything lower than 4300K will be yellow and anything higher than 6000K will be blue/violet. Remember, higher wavelengths of color pass through objects reflecting less light back. Our eyes pick up reflected light, so white light reflects the most. Larger wavelength light (yellow/orange/red) travels further, but still reflects less. These are good for times you don't want glare (fog lights), but not for driving lights where reflection is key to seeing what's in front of you.

I wanted to get a set for the Ranger, but being a bi-xenon kit, I'd have to see how they designed them. I don't feel like having 4 ballasts (like the old bi-xenon) if I don't have to. Can those with kits take some pics of what they received when they got theirs? And installed pics of the parts?

 

I just have 2 ballasts, one for each bulb, and the a small box that connects to a power source, and runs to the ballast. and then the bulbs

 

Do you still get high/low beam, or just low? The old setups for dual action bulbs (like 9007) were comprised of 2 ballasts per bulb with a switch between the high and low. The downside is that each time the highs were engaged, they had to charge up so.....they really didn't help if you needed a quick glimpse up ahead.


Do you have a harness as well? I got one for my tC because of the excess startup power of the bulbs potentially frying the light switch. Since it's an integrated blinker/light switch,I didn't want to spend 200$ bucks replacing it. The harness bypasses the switch and uses it ONLY to turn on the relay, not pass power from the battery to the relay and then the lights.

only cheezy ricers use temperatures over 6000K

Get projectors designed to use HID, and go 4300K, 5000K or 6000K.

 

I have yet to see a single projector headlight that actually looks good though.....

 

I ran a ddm kit in my old car for 2 years before i got my ranger and not a single problem. I'm currently running the ddm raptor kit 6000k 35 watt ballast and love it. Make sure you get a relay kit with it as well.

Hey JP7,I know your the lighting guy so why do you say plug n play kits arent good? And I'm nowhere near a ricer but I run DDM 55w kit w/ 8000k bulbs and their nice and white on the ground.Not that dark blue or purple **** that Ive seen ricers use round here.

I hated my HID's well they where very nice and bright the on coming traffic always flashed me. The housings i gave you look great with them here are some pics of the glare out put lol.

ONLY way to go. There are also many other recent threads with good information in them about proper HID retrofits that will not blind other drivers and provide excellent cutoff.

 

Simply put, the reflector housings, particularly ones designed for the halogen bulbs, do not properly focus the beam pattern of the HID bulb. You get more light, but it's not where you want it, and it blinds oncoming drivers. The projector will naturally focus the beam better, and because they have a cutoff shield, they will not blind other drivers.

As for the 55W bulbs, the reason they are not as colored is because the higher output washes out some of the color. There are a couple of companies out there that have enough of the salts in them that produce the color to still have a real deep color, but most 55W kits wash out the color and it's a whiter output. However, go over 6000K, and you're still getting a color that doesn't give you a lot on the road to a comparable lower wavelength.

Tons of people run DDM kits without problems. I'm getting really tired of Jp7 bashing every single person who has them or suggests them.

Not everyone has the skill to do a retrofit. How about some of the guys who have done a retrofit offer to do it for other members?

Myself? I will get an HID plug and play kit from DDM. Why? As of next summer my truck will not be my DD, it will be rebuilt as an offroad truck. Glare and improper alignment don't mean anything out on the trails

 

LOL. Justin, I can agree with the basic sentiment of your post and the constant bashing of everything not up to his standards, but in the case of HIDs, I have to agree.

On the road, HIDs in factory headlight housings are a nuisance. They glare like hell, regardless of what anyone claims. The reason less flashing is going on is they're so popular now that people are simply getting used to it, overwhelmed by it, or sick of flashing someone every 5 minutes. Of course not everyone is going to do a retrofit. So...don't install HIDs if you're driving it on the road.
