HID Off-Road Lights

I've been considering getting a set of HID lights for some time, and the only affordable set is the Vision-X 8500 8.7" Lights (yeah, really big).

They are $400 for the set and that includes wiring and whatnot.

Best thing is, the only use 35W and something like 3A when they are running as opposed to my (4) 55W Hella 500s.

I don't even have those bastards wired up yet...lol. I have some wiring setup for my rock lights that I never use, I'll just use the same wiring and hook up 2 of the lights and see how bright they are on my way home...OFF TOPIC!!

LET'S DISCUSS.....

hid's are great. there are 8 of the kc hid's on my bosses race jeep and they are an awesome light.

then again... that is a RACE truck that was racing in a night race, meaning high speeds in the desert, you gotta be able to see way ahead of you and very well.

for the type of offroading you would be doing, regular lights would be much better for the whole cost/benefit. it would be better to spend half that money and get some decent halogen lights and spend the rest of the money on something else.

Well, I figure when I pay my ranger off, I'm gonna get a 93-97 4x4 (cause they are so cheap) and turn it into an Expedition truck and I could put the HIDs on it when I get it.

But-- I will be installing HID headlights, hopefully before Xmas, and then getting some HID off-road lights after that. I would love to have the Lightforce's but they are just plain too expensive.

I will be going to basic training for the AF soon and I want to travel the western side of the US, cause I've been all over the Eastern side already...lol.

Alon said it perfectly..

Why do you NEED HID's?

Just get a decent light. I have three Hella 4000's on my truck, two Euro beams and one Pencil. They work VERY well.

Now if you are hell bent on HID's, I would get Hella 4000's (standard) then upgrade them with the ballast/bulb. You will pay ~100 for the light and ~200 for the upgrade which puts you at about half the cost of one 4000HID.

Take that money and put it into a fund to mod your later ranger.

Why pay $300 per for the light and the upgrade, when I can get the Vision-X 8500s for $400/set, and they are almost 9" lights.

To tell the truth, I might just wait for the new Hella HydroLux "water-proof" (1 meter) lights to come out and get some of them, they're HID as well and they can handle more water than the "water-proof" (11.8" for 2 minutes) IPF 900 XS.
