Painting Chrome

I want to paint both bumpers and my grille black to match my truck. Has anybody done this and had good results? How would I go about doing it?

Downey 03-26-2009 09:06 AM

take some 600 grit sand paper and sand the bumpers till they are dol and no shinny spots then primer it and then paint it. you can paint over anything with the right prep

Sand
clean
prime
paint

GT_hatchback 03-26-2009 04:59 PM

any special primer or cleaner?

rangerboy101 03-26-2009 05:00 PM

If i was you i would just look for some painted bumpers. Like one's off of an edge.

you going to spray paint it right?

If so just get the primer from the auto parts store that is with the paint try not to mix brands. i always clean with Windex or some glass cleaner because it removes oils

Quoted for failure.

I thought this site was about mods? Not discouraging people from DIY.

I would rather pay less than $50 for paint than a couple hundered bucks for two new bumpers

You dont have to sand til the chrome is gone just till it is dull. Let it dry and make sure you see no shiny spots and you are good to go.

Downey 03-28-2009 11:09 AM

sounds good if it doesnt work out when ever you want to come out i will fix it.

what paint are you guna use? dupli color?

RazorsEDGE 03-28-2009 11:33 AM

You should use etching primer and then a coat of filler primer on top of that. And if there is any rust in the chrome or if the chrome is chipping anywhere then the paint will start flaking and you WILL have to remove every last bit of chrome to make the paint stick.

Redneckstone 03-28-2009 12:10 PM

wow i can tell you guys havent been near body shops or ever doing a restoration on a vehicle...

*IF* you want to proper bond to a chromed part you want to sand blast the part that is chrome its not so much removing the chrome you will some. but its etching it is the main reason..

Ryan said Etching primer which is correct then sand and sealer primer then sand some more wet sand to atleast 2000grit then paint.. if its a base coat clear about 2-5 coats will do then sand wet sand atleast to 2000 grit then start the polishing buffing process till its nice and shiney..

like stated Etching primer and sealer primer..

Precleano for cleaning and prepping before all painting and primering.. removes contaminates and silicone so you dont get fish eyes

Light LIGHT key word skim of bondo on any minor rough spots and or low spots..
