Painting grill
So I have a 02 edge with the ugly plastic grill... finally got tired enough of it to paint it. I have plastic primer on it now, has some black satin finish plastic paint to go on in about half an hour. I saw someone on here said that the paint will come back off over the winter, one of the guys from Indiana I think. Its easy enough to do, wont be that bad if it comes back off.
I've been wanting to find a good stainless flame grill but I can't. I might post some pics once its done. |
no no no...you will post pics when its done...

haha yes, why would you tell us about it and not show us pictures ? |
If you prep and paint it properly it definitly wont come off in winter...
Just for refrence, I've done some pretty heavy mudding and powerwash sprays with my fender flares, and I did a full proper paint job on them, sanding, one coat of primer, 3 coats of krylon fusion, and 3 coats of matte clearcoat.. and its been many many months.. they still look perfectly! |
well i already screwed up kinda, decided to take some pics and realized its raining
the primer was on about 30-45 minutes before it got wet... i'm gonna let it dry in the garage and see if i can paint it or not. |

Wish I would have done that to my trim pieces. I just did 2 coats of the fusion. Hope it holds up.

I painted the grill on my truck 3 years ago. 2 coats of primer, and 3 coats of the regular Krylon flat black paint and it has not chipped, flaked, or peeled off at all, and that's driving it everyday year round through the michigan winters.
|
I hope mine last like you guys has. I just wiped the water off, now I'm gonna re-primer, will probably will use two coats of the paint I have.
|
Don't rush the job. Take your time and let it dry out.
|
I gave my primer 1 hour to dry and set.. then each coat of paint (applied in thin coats) I let sit for 45 minutes to an hour apiece.. then the same with the clearcoat, thin coats, and about an hour apiece.. took me all night and early into the next morning to get it done right with all 4 flares.

is the clear coat worth it? i like the idea of just adding another coat if it got bad
|
Clear coats form an extra hard protective coat that wont accidentally mar down to the primer and/or the plastic.. its easier to make a repair by just needing to spray clearcoat on, then to have to match up with another coat of the black.. little less maintenance.. and looks an awful lot better in my own opinion.
|
i might coat it tomorrow then, it looks a ton better now with two coats of paint. waiting to apply the second coat was a good excuse to clean inside too.
i'll try to use the roommates camera for a pic tonight. |
I painted my grill and it lasted fine through the winter. mine was already painted a graphite color as part of the offroad package, but it looked too much like a plastic base model grill. The first attempt was a failure, using spray cans the white was too off white and the clearcoat was yellow/orangish so it came out like it was puposely off white. The second attempt was a success because we used real paint and a professional paint gun.
