Pic Request: Camper Shells

Im looking at getting a camper shell for my truck and would like to see some others with them. I know Sea-Bass and Trigger01 had them on there trucks. Also what are your opinions on them. Good? Bad?

do you use your bed to haul atvs or anything like that? i hate my cap kills the view out the back. makes blind spots when off roading. i have a tool box now and i love it place to store stuff and keep it out of the cab but still keep it dry

I loved when I had a cap on my ranger for the winter, and ran a soft cover in the summer. The only caps I like are the smooth fiberglass ones that line up with the cab.

Caps seem to be a love/hate thing. As far as looks go I think they look real grizzly on a lifted truck. But a cap isn't really something you get for the "looks".

I have never had to haul an atv and probly never will need too. Visibility is the one thing i do worrie about i dont offroad that much so thats not that big of a deal. How bad is it when just driving normally.

That one looks great, my truck is pretty much stock height but i have bigger tires on it. I do like the looks of them but im going to start traveling more and i think it would be nicer then a tonneau cover. I would most likely run it year round. I was looking at a leer 100xl or 100xr.

If you get one with the side windows like almost all them got it's not bad at all, maybe a little nuisance backing up, but experience will help ya there

Prices will be all over the board. If you get a brand new one with the works (sliding windows, LED brake light, dome light, etc...) you can expect to drop over a grand after paint. If you keep your eyes peeled in the local ads you might find one for a couple hundred bucks.

This is a Leer 100xlt on my 98, now the model is called a 100xlt.
Came with a front sliding tilt window, window screens on the sides, carpet headliner.
I loved this cap because of the way the windows opened. The front and top are fixed, and it opens on the bottom and the back. I could leave it open in crazy amounts of rain and it wouldn't get wet back there. Visibility wasn't that bad, that's why you have mirrors. I never hit a single thing with that truck even offroading in the mountains on tight trails.

I would have liked to get this model for my F150 but I decided to buy used this time and I had to live with what I found. I like the cap (ARE) I have on the F150 but it gets a lot of rain in back with the windows tilted open.

Caps are awesome unless you haul large stuff all the time. I love being able to throw my tools back there and not have to worry about them disappearing. Also good for traveling and stuff not getting wet.

I used mine for sleeping in all the time. Sometimes when camping, it is nice because it is quick and easy, already setup, you aren't laying on the ground, no worries about getting soaked in the rain. Also a lot of times I like "traveling and exploring" more than camping, so I'd go sightseeing or whatever and park in the back of a lot somewhere and sleep in back incognito.

Here is the back of the F150 now, mainly for the same reason. Screw tents! This works perfectly, but it is kind of tight with two people if you have to juggle your stuff around.

Somewhere, I'll have to dig up pictures later this afternoon if I get a chance.
I build some stuff that went back there, was carpet covered and everything but really easy to remove.

Not as nice but functional. I have been told the truck looks better with it on. I am not sure what to make of that.

I took off the ugly rack. It looks much better.

Having had caps on previous trucks I can say that having screens is nice when camping but having the side windows open wide is great when actually using the cap day to day. I think Leer makes one that has both if you are looking to buy new. I like the look of having it level with the cab roof but if you consider a porta-potti, a higher one would be better. I tinted the windows with 5% removable static tint from Wally World for about $25.00. Now it is safer camping stealth style. Just remember light and noise discipline if you are where you are not supposed to be!

If you might just put it on for trips, and you can tolerate used, they can be had very cheaply, even fiberglass. This aluminum one I got for $50.00 it is in very nice shape. Though aluminum is kind of utilitarian.

I forgot you asked what people thought: I like having the open bed in general but for travel it is way more convenient to have the cap. Also I don't have a bed full of snow in the winter. I don't have half as many leaves come in my back window and you still get a really good breeze. My stuff is more secure in the back and with a regular cab a cap gives a lot more room for bags, gear, whatever.

If you can get one with side windows that flip open it will make access much easier.

A cap can be temporary, the back of a van is not. Also try finding a 4x4 van this high off the ground at a reasonable price.

I usually don't like a cap but they do come in handy I would prefer no cab roof but pickups don't come that way. Personally I did consider a van though.
