Plastidip fun

Just had some fun with plastidip. Did the hood, bumpers, rockers all the way around. I like the look. Im thinking of the bed caps and maybe more. Its addicting.

looks good! Did you feel like it was hard to keep even? I really want to try this. I assume you painted with cans and not the gun?

Well it seemed like the sides dried more evenly. Yea Just the spray cans from Lowes. The front bumper has no texture at all it is perfectly smooth. The hood was the first part i did. didn't turn out the greatest but well see i might try to wash it a couple times. Either way I like the look. Its a truck it doesn't gotta be perfect. I kinda like the rough look on the hood though. Looks like bedliner. I put like 5 coats. I might put a few more to get it nice and thick. But im gonna hold the can further away to try to even out the lines. But i should have started with a light coat first like on the sides. And I might have held it a little close at first. You can still see the spray lines after it dried. Then i took an old clean t shirt and lightly wipe it with laquer thinner to try and even out the blotches/lines. it does help smooth the surface and give more even appearance. just not too hard because you know what would happen. You can still see the lines in it. But doesnt really bother me too much because i just like the look in general. The hood was a learning experience. The sides turned out alot smoother.I did alot of research on this before i started. Just werent many guys doing it on the their rangers. I found a couple but not what I was looking for. Do it. If you dont like it peel it off. But im keeping it. If it peels I will redo it. I also used a razor blade to get perfect clean lines otherwise it will have choppy lines. Be careful not to cut into your paint. I know I did slightly in a few places. Still a few places I need to touch up. But its fun stuff. Im wondering if I should do the Bed caps. Also kinda want to do more on the sides. Like the body lines just to see what it looks like. Just went and bought 3 more cans. Off work tomorrow... Uh Oh.

Looks good. I think applying glossifier for the hood would look a lot better and match the body paint.

don't be afraid to lay it on fairly heavy after a lighter first coat. It generally levels itself very well. And never stop and start a new pass without spraying past the surface. kinda like real painting.

Warming the cans helps get a more even, consistent coating.

I did my bumpers, wiper arms, antenna, lower window trim & badges..
its held up amazingly well..there's a few scratches & tears, but i think it looks good still.

Also did the passenger airbag key/change holder thing on the interior dash, that is holding up great.
I can get pics if anyone is interested.

Getting clean lines is difficult, you have to remove the tape before it dries...a 2 man job for larger areas.
I helped a buddy do some stripes and a bug guard on his Chevy.

Something that most people dont know is its also available in clear gloss or clear matte finish.

When I did my hood I did just like yours but I didn't tape off the "v" in the hood. Mine came out striped and rough too. In fact the texture was rough enough that when I washed it the plastidip on the hood held a bunch of fibers from my wash mit. It was a pia to try to get off. Eventually decided to just peel it. That wasn't too easy either. People say that it just peels right off no biggie, not on a hood! I think it has to do with sitting in the sun and all of the heat cycles of the engine. After having it on my hood for 6 months I couldn't get a single piece larger than a half dollar coin to come off in one shot. Ended up using a steam washer to get it. It's amazing what a couple hundred degrees and a couple thousand psi will do.

If you don't lay it on thick enough, it'll suck to peel off. Most of the time if you get a striped look its because you didn't do enough coats. Peeling the dip off of my wheels the first time sucked because of that and it was a nightmare! Once I laid it on thick, its easy to peel off in 1 single piece.

I used a full can per wheel and 2 cans on the hood. Thought that would be enough. I think the rough texture came from trying to finish the last coat. I really didn't have enough for a full coat and I tried to make it work.

Ah that'll prob do it. I use 1 can per wheel as well and I dont let coats fully dry before spraying another one on. I've never done a hood, just wheels so idk about the hood

peels off easy as long as you use a thick coat... also when peeling, it helps alot of the dip is warm, best but would be leave it in the sun for a couple hours on a hot day, or a long time with a heat gun/blow drier.

Plasti Dip Aerosol Sprays | Enhancers | GunMetal Spray | Pearlizer - Plasti Paint USA

they also carry the less common color options.

walmart and lowes are bigger retailers than carry the spray cans.
