repair of factory '02 Tonneau cover

What I thought as a big bonus when buying my extended cab, standard bed 2002 Ranger XLT a couple of months ago is the tonneau cover from hell.
It's a two-piece composite solid cover, hinged in the middle, very versatile. But the locks and cables are missing (the latches are in good shape).
I need details to replace the missing items. Any info is appreciated!

mhoward Aug 13, 2017 10:38 AM

That doesn't sound like a "factory" bed cover. I don't think Ford provided a two-piece hinged cover. But being fair, there really wasn't a "factory" bed cover as they are ALL aftermarket (mine is ARE brand). Can you provide pictures, brand name or any other info that might help identify it? Look on the under side of the cover for a serial plate. Most of them have one.

Hi, and thanks for the quick response.
It may not be OEM and an ID plaque would make it way too simple.
I took a couple of photos and I have the missing gas struts ready to install, and locks (order due soon) but my major head scratcher is the cables. Might have to make them up from a bike shop but I would LOVE to see a photo of an original.
Thanks.

Yeah, damn those pesky ID plaques!

I have never seen a cover like yours. Hopefully someone here will recognize it and give a shout out. Pretty nice design though. Mine is a solid, one-piece design color matched to the truck. But... it is a PITA to actually haul something if it has to stand upright.

BigEdge126 Aug 14, 2017 04:39 PM

When I bought my 02 that cover was in the brochure as a factory option. Not sure where to get parts tho.

mhoward Aug 14, 2017 04:56 PM

Interesting. I got my first Ranger in 2004 (2001 Edge). When I was shopping around I had several to choose from, some with bed covers, some without. All the covers I ever saw were like mine (ARE solid fiberglass one-piece). You know how it is, once you start driving something, you automatically start noticing all the OTHER vehicles like yours. Seen hundreds over the years with bed covers... but not one like John Ventura has. I know Ford offered covers as a "factory" option, but they were all aftermarket installed by a third party company. At least, that is how it was explained to me by a dealer.

Ran across this by searching "2002 ford ranger factory tonneau cover". This might lead to a source for pics, cable schematics or parts?

I know this is an older thread but the OP's tonneau was a factory option. My 2002 FX4 came with it and it was listed on the window sticker as a $895 option.

@Sublime: Some people get all twisted up about posting to an old thread (sometimes referred to as "necro-posting"). I look at it like this: if you have relevant information that will help someone else reading this thread weeks, months, even years later, then by all means, you should add that information! The fact that you actually had purchased this on your truck as a factory option, validates previous info. Someone else will come along and find this useful, so thanks for taking the time to post! :)

black06xlt Nov 22, 2017 05:34 PM

i just acquired one these from an 04 xlt. the truck was a factory ordered truck the cover was a dealer installed part bought from ford as a $1000.00 option. from what i gathered on these covers they are rare due to the price and was offered from 01-o5 (could be wrong on the years)

mhoward Nov 22, 2017 05:58 PM

Yes, these covers (apparently there were 3 or 4 different styles) were factory authorized, Ford provided, dealer installed options. I've had two Rangers (01 and 03), both with flare side beds and fiberglass solid factory tonneau covers. Love them!

Good morning. Im also looking for parts. Any idea what the struts/shocks look like ? Mine doesnt have any, is there anyway you could measure and send me a picture of them? Have found replacement site or what strut will work? my cell is 7312-926-6760. Thanks

Michael

Where did you get your gas struts for your cover ?

Bird76Mojo Dec 16, 2018 05:06 PM

Napa should be able to order any length of gas charged "shocks" you need for these covers. They've always had a good selection in the past.

GB :)

I just purchased the Ford Tonneau Bi-Fold from the private seller. It came without the key and I have no idea how to make a new key or re-key it. I called Ford, but they told me that this is not an original Ford product and I should call Leer dealer. There is no manufacturer on the cover and I have no idea who to call. I was hoping to replace the whole lock, but I cannot remove it. There is a number on the lock, but again I have no idea who will be able to make a key using this number.
Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you

John, did you find out where your buy the parts? I'd like to replace a strut, the locking mechanisms and and the bracket the lock connects to.

Does anybody know how to install the Tonneau hardware on the truck bed? I installed the center piece, but have no idea how to install front and back hooks.

I know that I am resurrecting the dead here, but I am hoping people are still around that can tell me the part numbers for gas springs that will fit this bed cover. I recently bought an '03 Ranger, rust free, a few small dings, and only 108,000 miles. It's a very nice little truck but the gas springs are completely missing.

Mine doesn’t have a part number

I don’t think it matters part number wise as long as you get the correct length. Have you tried just going to a auto store?

Hector0720 May 18, 2022 07:05 AM

My pickup truck has that same cover and it's original and says Ford OEM. And I bought it in 2002 new from the dealer in Puerto Rico

Same issue here

My son just bought the same cover this week for his 2011 Ranger and is having the same problems. John, were you ever able to come up with any solutions for your cover?

Attaching some stuff to hopefully help others in the future.
